 Post subject: isengard strategy

Location: the prancing pony, near the fireplace
i was thinking about making a big phalanx with uruk warrior with shield in front behind them 2 rows of pikes
and to protect the flanks go with 2 trolls or 6 beserkers.
will the lack of archers be a to big downside and what heroes should i use?

it's just an idea so feel free to call it Devlan Mud :)

Two rows of pikes will be expensive so just go for a Captain. Having no archers shouldn't be a big problem, though I'd personally like to include a few.

so to make this army you could have

lurtz and 9 uruk hai - shields (front row) 150
10 uruk hai pikes (second row) 100
1 uruk hai banner and 9 uruk pikes (back row) 129
8 berserkers 120

total 499

just a suggestion

i would rather use lurtz than a captain because of the extra might
hope you get to use an army like this

@ evilatmind I think that list is not LOME legal, seeing as lurtz is from the isengard raiders list and your army is from the fortress of isengard list (raiders cant have the fighting uruk-hai) and you dont have a hero from the fortress of isengard.

But if being LOME legal isnt an issue then its a fine list.

No, but an extra Might is always nice.

I like evilatmind's list, but, like Noddwyr said, it's not LoME legal. Maybe just swap Lurtz for a Captain?

Having no archers can be a problem, especially if your enemy has plenty of them. What you have to realise is, while you may not lose too many men charging your enemy, since you can't return fire you will be obliged to charge them. This means your enemy can set up his formations however he pleases, and can respond to changes in your formation far more quickly than you can. He can also split up his formation so he can flank you when you charge, position his heroes better, and better guard his own flanks. Armies without archers can certainly win, but you do need to appreciate the advantage you are giving your enemy.

Good points. Crossbowmen are very good and if you have enough, you can easily reverse this problem. Again, mobility is lacked by Fortress of Isengard so you can ally in some warg riders as flankers.

I don't think that's a good idea, because as well as getting the Warg Riders which aren't cheap you'd have to get a Hero, which will use up more points and mean you'll be even more outnumbered than usual. It would be better just to guard you flanks with berserkers.

Berserkers you're saying should be used as defenders not to out maneuvere the enemy, get to objectives. Maybe not a good idea in small games but in larger games you'll really need that extra speediness and you'll probably be using a raiders hero at that points' anyway.
