I started adding texture to some of the rock bases. I mix a little paint with the wood glue and sift the sand onto the base. This will help with painting it later.I have to cast my mold 7 more times to have enough road pieces to finish up.

Image I did not intend to when I started, I decided to make the road removable so I can detail the cave.

GW spiders

I have not quite finished these. I would like some comments and criticism. I have started Shelob and a official spider queen. I would like suggestions. I have more spiders that I have been practicing on. I would be happy to try somthing different as well.

those spider look good.
The only two things I think you could improve are the eyes (more highlights) and a bit of freehand on the main body.

goblin town is coming along nicely aswell.

As far as i know the scenery you have putted the spiders on just makes the picture complete. It feels like something really natural that way. Almost like some terrarium. The spiders looks nice to. So i am sorry but i can't help improving them. They look good enough for me :-D For future spiders you could also try some other colors for the spiders. There are really allot of nice varieties of colors and spider kinds to paint. Keep it up 8)

I am having trouble with web. I used soft iron wire. I was going to tie it like a rat line on a ship. But, the soft wire bends when I try to tie it. I may have to use tread. To much trouble for 12. Suggestions would be appreciated.

The spiders have turned out very nicely, especially the last one. As far as the web is concerned I really do not know what you could do that would work well but you could try weaving the web together first and then glue it to the tree. I would not be as durable as it would be if you did it the way you are doing but it could be easier and if you secure it to the bases in same way you are doing it should be stable enough to survive.
You've done a very good job so far so keep it up.

I got frustrated working on the web so I decided to make a tree from the wasted wire. I twisted the wire. I coated it with hot glue. That is when I came up with a new idea. If I painted the wire with green neon paint it would look like a spirit. I could make make it glow in the dark with the Halloween varnish. If I use white I could probably use the idea for web too. That is how the idea for the larger tree for the D&D spider came about.

The skull wall was an experiment. I took some of the oil based clay that does not dry out. I pressed some different shapes into it and then poured plaster into the indention. It worked a lot better than I thought it might. I painted the cast with ivory and used Minwax golden oak to finish it.
I used the Warhammer parts because a friend wanted me to make him a well. you can see the bottom in the photo. It is the unpainted skull cast.

I will paint some wire tomorrow and try it .

With the web, how strong do you want it to be? If it's only there for decoration then may be you could draw out the web shape on a bit of plastic with PVA glue, maybe with some white paint added, building it up in layers until you get it as thick as you want then you can hang it off the areas you want it to be. Dunno if that would work but just an idea.

That is hard to answer. Some of my spiders are so old they are lead. Some are tin. I have 8 that are hard plastic I have some soft plastic D&D spiders that are very light. The hot glue over wire will work for the lead. For decoration I have some purpose made Halloween web decorations I can use. I was trying to work on movement trays for WOTR. I want to make the movement trays fairly sturdy.
I don't think the spider forest decorations will have to be very sturdy.

If you think of any thing else let me know. I am sure it will be worth a try.

Ahhh, so I guess you want to hang the spiders on the webs, sorry I've not got any ideas for that but I think the wire should be a good idea when you can get it to work.

I have to work on the base color so that it better matches the spider movement trays. I also will have to go over all of the road pieces at the same time so that the pieces will all match. I am going to use water based Minwax for the final seal.
ImageImage
I made the road removable on both of these rock pieces. I made some detail parts for the interior of the cave. You can see the entryway in the above photo. I am going to keep the detail parts separate because I want to set it up more than one way. The short section makes a good place to hide a battery box or a dish for dry ice for a fog effect. I worked out the wiring to make battery operated camp fires. If I can find everything I need I am going to make torches too.
This is a totally modular set so if some body has an idea of something that would be fun to try I would love to hear from you.

That mist or lights in it ; sounds great. You could make it real spooky. ( If you want to make it looks like there is a dragon in it ( then you will need a flamethrower or something to fit in. :-D .) Nice job. It's a great piece of terrain so far.

Thanks
You gave me another idea
I think I will try fiber optic lights when I start the dead marches. So now all I have to do is decide how to hide the dry ice dish for the fog :-D

It good to hear that the webs have worked out. It looks very good and your spiders are getting better and better.
As usual your terrain pieces are great. The rocks look very realistic. It be be a treat to see the completed work.

Well, they have and they have not. I am still not satisfied. It has been difficult to get a consistent result. The craft stores started putting Halloween decorations on the shelf. I might be able to find something I have not thought about. I need to get some more pine bark.I will put my snake leggings and boots in the truck in case I have an opportunity. It has been so hot it is not the best time to go turning over old logs.
I have some family obligations this week I don't think I will post any new photos. But every thing is working out with goblin town and I will start to cut out the hobbit inn and wide river and water falls.
