Post subject:  For Mordor! (WIP by Sorastro) Orc Update 07/06/10

Hi fellow painters,

Now I've finished my small but workable Gondorean army (see gallery) I thought I'd start a Mordor force.

I picked up a box of orcs yesterday and did the preliminary stuff as you can see below, but have yet to decide a color theme for the force. As with my other army I'd like one color to tie the whole thing together but am really undecided as to which color to go with.

I'd also like to be able to batch paint the troops at a reasonable pace so will be tryng to cut corners where possible; black will feature quite heavily along with (obviously) a metal finish for the armor.. I just need one more color to give them some identity. I'm considering purple; guess I'll have to try a test model and see...

I love the variety of poses in these boxes.

All undercoated and ready to go...

My progress on this force will be a little sporadic as I'm moving house this week and will be without broadband for a while, but I thought there's no harm in starting a WIP which I can update as and when I can.

Happy hobbying!

Mark.

Looks lie you're off to a good start. I'd go with red as your other color, also involving some browns in the color scheme would be good too. Purple just doesn't seem very Mordorish to me.

I dont know about purple, that seems a bit to regal for orcs IMHO. I agree with longbottom leaf on going with red. Looking forward to seeing the next update. :D

Thanks for the advice Longbottom and Noddwyr. I've gone with your suggestion and tried red; I wanted to try to pull off something a bit more unusual but chickened out and I'm pretty happy with the red.

Here's a couple of test models. I think they could be a bit more weathered, and I'd also like to try some more subtle skin tones (more greyish/blue perhaps). C & C very welcome...

Great work! I really like the red in particular, I think it was definitley the right choice. Would you mind sharing how you painted it? Great job on the skin tones as well. Look forward to another update from you soon! :)

Nice! I think you did a really nice job on the red, nice and dark.

Thanks folks. I've hardly used red in the past so had to improvise a bit. Here's what I did (ratios are only a rough guide!):

Base coat of a 70:30 mix of Mechrite Red and Orkhide Shade (for a nice dark base coat). I then added some highlights with Scab Red followed by a slightly-watered-down wash with Leviathan Purple. I then added final highlights by adding some Tausept Ochre to the Scab Red (which I picked as it's a fairly dull orangey yellow).

I liked the red too. They look very nice.

Is the ground work wallpaper?

Thanks Oldman Williw, and well spotted!

The background is part of a set of city-based terrain tiles I made as part of a Mordheim project a couple of years ago - hence the cobble-effect wallpaper :)

I like those orcs, nice and grimy. Though I think that you should branch out with the skin colours, blue, green, grey, brown-ish, purple-ish, and skin-ish are all possible skin colours. 8)

Thanks fellow painters!

I'll give some of those skin tone ideas a go avenger.. though I won't be painting for a few days 'cos I'm moving house in the morning (finally get my own computer/painting/general-nerdiness room!).

Happy hobbying!

Hi fellow hobbyists,

Now I've finally settled into my new house I've resumed some painting and thought I'd share a brief update.

I've done the metal drybrushing on my orcs and begun painting the fabrics. As can be seen below I've arranged them in pairs of models of the same type and have deliberately used the thematic red color on different parts of identical models to create a more varied look:

I've just begun work on the black and brown sections of fabric and will finish with the skin and weapon shafts.

I also picked up some command models yesterday. I'm particularly fond of the task master (actually I quite like the champion too). I'm looking forwards to painting these fellas once the rank and file are done:

Happy painting!

Sorastro, really nice work on the orcs! I think the red theme is going to look sweet on these guys. I'm following your thread with interest, as I'll be painting up a Mordor army once my elves are done (I've already purchased most of the models!). Looking forward to seeing that command group painted up! 8)
