Post subject: | Painting Frenzy - orcs |
Over the past couple of months I've put myself on a quest to paint all of my LOTR collection, I have painted so far to WOTR size armies my, Dwarves (could do with another box), Gondor and Goblins below: ...and decided to do Mordor next. The problem is that I detested the plastic orc models and they have been sitting around for years while I bought and painted their metal brothers, but I had to do them and fortunately stumbled across a quick and dirty method for my goblins - and I mean QUICK! Even better, I think they look great, nowhere near as good as many can paint - but when you can paint 60 quicker than 1 'pro' painted model, it's great Here's the majority of them, there are a couple of metals that got painted at the same time: A closer view: Painting Guide 1) Base, sand an prime the models black. I stand mine in a row on a length of wood on an old kitchen cabinet, this then allows me to get to the undersides easy. 2)Paint the entire model and base a dark brown, I use Coat d'arms horse brown (scorched brown), paint by heavily dry-brushing, you want the whole surface covered but leave the deep reccesses black. This will be the main colour of your orc, pants, shirt, belts etc. 3) Paint bolt gun metal on all metal parts. 4) Paint all wood your prefered colour, I use Bestial Brown. 5) Next we will individualise the models by selecting a few skin tones for your orcs, I used dwarf flesh, elf flesh, fortress grey, goblin green and bubonic green and paint all flesh. 6) Personalise your orcs even further by selecting a few base colours such as dark grey, leather brown, vermin brown, red gore and dark flesh. Overpaint various articles of clothing chosing just 1 or 2 of your selected colours. This will totaly randomise every individual orc, not one will be the same, and at the same time give them a uniformed look. If you need to, paint belts and straps dark brown or black. 7) Now the main part, which will blend you paint together giving them the dirty look from the film - a liberal coating of black wash and allow to dry. 8 ) Finish the base with a very light dry-brush of beached bone a light coating of white on your rocks. 9) Add a bit of you favourite flocking and seal the lot with a coat of spray varnish. And a close up: Thats Mordor done (although am waiting for some cavalry bases to finish the warg riders) 184+orcs plus the rest of the army , Isengard next. I've just noticed in the pic there are 2 orcs with pelta shields, the one in the foreground has somehow slipped into th pile and is an older painted 'properly' model with highlights etc. The one on the left is the recently painted model - think I prefere the dirty look of the new one . |
