I've been working on a beach board recently. This is my first board I've actually made and I'm quite enjoying myself. Bonus cookie if you can guess what movie it's based on If I was repeating it, there are a few things I'd do differently. Notably, I'm not overly thrilled with the tower and feel I put too many waves in. Otherwise, I'm quite happy. Next stage is to continue the tower and build a jetty. |

Looking nice! Keep up the good work! And now, for the guess... Guns of Navarone? |

That's a really cool board - will you be making any boats to go with it? |

Looks great. Did you use GW's water stuff? Somehow I think it is based on Troy.. |

Cheers all! Bit bogged down at the moment but hopefully I'll get another update done soon. As for the guesses, no one has got it yet. It might help if I specified that the tower will be a light house (in the movie it's octagonal and crumbling but I took the easy option ). Also the addition of a jetty should help make things clearer. Guns of Navarone is a decent guess though, I loved the book and I hadn't even thought of building something off that. Saving Private Ryan has been done before but does look really cool. Afraid I haven't even seen Troy to compare it to (don't judge). Having been replaying Dragon Age Origins, I'm highly tempted to make a board based on Ostagar (Gondor fortress) or the crumbling ruins in the Korcari Wilds (Ithilien?) but they can wait for another time @ imrail - Nup, as the first picture shows, the water is mostly just paint on wood. The waves were made out of polyfilla. Was an interesting experience, if slightly frustrating when it kept sticking to my fingers (but alternatively too much water made it a gooey mess). But ultimately it was quite easy. |

I was thinking of making a beach board as well, this is really inspiring! |

Is it Whitecap Bay from Pirates of the Caribbean 4? |

Erurainon the Trombonist wrote: Is it Whitecap Bay from Pirates of the Caribbean 4? Aye, that's what I was aiming for. Surprised you got it at this point. A reference pic for those who can't see it (nor do I blame you ): This isn't quite the same as the movie but gives an idea. Reference pics are very hard to find so I've just been using the actual movie for inspiration. @ Chris GoM - Sorry I missed you before. Initially I was planning to build a big ship out in the sea but seem to have shot myself in the foot with my waves. Will probably go for a number of smaller boats instead. EDIT - UPDATE! Did a little more on it today, focussing on the tower/lighthouse and the jetty. Also discovered that my new balsa bricks are larger than my previous ones... Cause me a few problems. I'm trying to decide how to connect the jetty with the ramps. My thought was to do another ramp but it might be a bit steep. Alternatively I could leave it or try stairs. Before anyone comments, I know the lighthouse looks a tad dodgy, I'm hoping it'll look a lot better once it has a roof on top (the dome in the background of the pics). Sorry they're a bit blurred, I was in a rush at the time. |

I really like the wooden boards leading up to the tower. Much better idea than stairs. |

Cheers . I was initially planning to go with either plain ramps or stairs/horizontal ladders but it was too steep for the models to sit on. This way, models can finish their move halfway along a ramp and stay there, plus it looks ok. Also, for additional point of reference, the doorway halfway up the lighthouse is just tall enough to cause falling damage if anyone was to topple off the platform (stopping pesky wall scalers or quick exits). I'm tempted to try a Jack Sparrow simulation dive from the top into the water and see if he can somehow survive (though think he'll need a couple of fate points ). |

Sorry about the Double Post but I have an update! Not the update most suited for pictures, a lot of prep work, but here's a few. Work on the top of the tower including undercoating and filling in all the many gaps. Went a bit oveboard with the polyfilla but I'm hoping it will stop me having to use the last of my textured paint. Used a metal ruler to score lines into the wood: Also coated the water in PVA to make it look wet. Of course, just when you think you're done with the water... The new waves will require some careful painting I'm sure. |

How will you be painting the waves. Also whats your opinion of the textured paint? |

The waves will get a blue basecoat and then get built up with white with a couple of layers. The textured paint I've been using has been brilliant, I've used it on the cliffs and tower. I mean, it looks ridiculous by itself (it has glitter in it) but as an undercoat that then gets painted over the top of, it really makes things look a lot better. I'm rather happy with how it added a bit extra to the cliffs and it stops the balsa bricks looking quite so much like wood. |
