I had this idea last year when I first started to collect models, but it got no further than an idea. I joined the one ring a few weeks ago and have been inspired to have a go. I also was introduced to Majestic Bear Miniatures! Daves tree giants will feature in this. The plan is to make a set of modular terrain pieces that can be placed in a variety on ways. At the moment there will be three main sections, two featuring dead trees and a third being tree stumps. I also aim to add a number of smaller pieces which can include an abandoned orc encampment, remains of a fire or anything that seems to fit. (Well open to ideas if anybody wants to chip in). At the back end of last year I made a couple of prototypes, just to get an idea. ![]() Granted, not very inspiring. They just look like twigs, but with a bit of window dressing I think the idea can be made to work. These two will be the basis of the main dead tree pieces. (Treebeard is in for scale). ![]() The one on the left is actually a dead bonsai tree, I intend to chop it down and get a bit more drama in the scene. And of course, the stars of the show! ![]() Next few days I will play with layouts and basing. Hope to get some serious rocks and levels on the bases. Any ideas would be welcome. Cheers |

I really like that knarly bonsai. I need to find me some twisted roots or something for my own scenery. |

First mock up Just using some scrap card to do a first mock up on one of the trees and its small extras. Its starting to look a little like what I had in mind. Going to overdo the differences in ground level and go large on the rocky outcrops. ![]() |

Been busy at work, came home keen to get something done, so decided to try a prototype rocky outcrop. To be honest, I've never made anything like this before, but read somewhere that a decent result can be gained with cork and cork tiles. 20 mins in with a glue gun and a bit of slap, must admit, I'm well pleased. I will keep this element for the terrain. Should be OK when given a bit of colour and some static grass peeking out of some of the nooks and crannies. I'm going to do a few more bits like this and aim to start on UKFB tree giants at the weekend. Yay. ![]() |

Something that works very good for stones and rocky surfaces is pieces of bark mulch! I used it for a few of my Rohan heroes' bases and it looks really great! Your cork is nice nevertheless! Looking forward to your progress on this project |

Wow, that outcrop looks brilliant for 20 minutes work! Mind telling us how you painted it? ![]() |

Hi, thanks for the encouragement. Its just some old bits of cork floor tile, snapped up and glued together (hot melt) a bit like a dry stone wall. Pick a bit up and just glue it on somewhere. I attacked it with a scalpel to get rid of the "edges" and glued some bits on for loose rock. Quick coat of cheap black acrylic. When that was nearly dry just did a quick wet/dry brush of grey using quite a large brush then a quick highlight of white. (The white naturally blended into the black and grey as it was still quite wet) I didn't take any "during" pics as I was just messing around, but I am pleased with it so will do some more with pics. @ rognarr, bark mulch, doh, of course. I'll give it go, cheers. |
