My only constant opponent for LOTR has been absent due to his work schedule for two plus years now. Truthfully the break was good. I didn't want to paint even a little bit for the longest time! Once the desire returned I had hundreds of Carn Dum barbarians, Dunland soldiers and Wildmen of Dunland that I had bought but never did anything with. My buddy has a very large gorgeous Rohan army so getting around to them was always way down the list of priorities. I've knocked out 50-60 of the Dunlanders and assorted bad guys and ready to at least begin Rohan. Along the way of collecting my Rohan army I picked up some Foundry Greek Argonauts that struck me as full of possibilities. I am not the best painter by a long stretch and I'm 100X worse at "modeling" so conversions are tough from the get go. I thought these turned out pretty cool for some captains, outriders, etc. Would like to get any opinions you would care to share. WIll these guys "pull it off"? Are they Rohan-y enough? |

cool find, I think it's very apparent though that they are greeks. Maybe if you could make the armor a little bit less present and add cloaks to them they could pass as warriors. As heroes the helmeted ones would work, especially if they were mounted |

They are whatever you want them to be. However, for me, personally I would not use them as Rohan troops. They just don't fit what I picture, in my minds eye, as Rohan soldiers. Perhaps it's too much Peter Jackson. Didn't JRR once state that Rohan soldiers were pictured as mounted Saxons or Normans or something along those lines? I seem to recall something about a Tapestry depicting what he pictured Rohan troops to be like. Anyway, I vote NO. However, it is totally your choice. |

I see them as a better fit for Gondor, but hey, it's your train set. Have fun |

Not very rohirrim, too greek still. Nice translation though. The helmeted ones do look very royal guardish. Nice painting anyway |

I agree with John Wayne, the guys with helmets could be used as royal guards maybe. But you definitely should add armor, or at least cloth to the legs. And without conversion many of them look too greek unfortunatley. Nice models nevertheless |

Personally, I wouldn't use Greeks for anything LOTR, as Tolkien's inspiration for pretty much all the races of Middle Earth seems to be Dark Ages/early Medieval armies. This is because Tolkien was a bit of an expert in this period of world (and especially British) history, if memory serves me correctly. If you look in all of the books, any reference to armour is almost always 'mail' - it's only since the PJ movies that we have Elves in segmented plates, Gondor knights in full plate reminiscent of 15th Century Europe, Easterling Cataphracts, etc - and troops in mail is a generally Dark Ages/early Medieval thing (although mail originated among the continental Celts in the 4th century BC and was used extensively by the Romans as wel right up til the fall of the Western Empire in the 5th Century and longer in the Eastl) So, Greeks in linen cuirass and bronze greaves don't work for me personally, although they are lovely models and the paint scheme is very good. For Rohan,if using historical minis, I would personally use Norman models or Arthurian Romano-British (see Gripping Beast miniatures range, or Westwind's range for ideal examples) You could also use Saxon or Viking models for Rohirrim foot. Personally, for Gondor, I'd use the new Fireforge Templar knights and Sergeants...very cool plastic models!! But like everyone else has said, if you want to use your Greeks go for it. It wouldn't bother me if I was playing a game against you. We all have our own views and our own approaches to the hobby which is exactly how it should be in my opinion! |

Thanks everyone for the responses! Just to be clear, I have all of the GW Rohan models. These guys were just for extra captains, outriders, villagers, etc. They are pretty Greek still though aren't they? I appreciate the kind comments and you taking the time to consider the figs. I have found the Gripping Beast, Black Tree and Wargames Factory models all good fits for Dunland and CArn Dum! |

It's also worth checking the Perry Miniatures First Crusade range for Rohan (perhaps with shield swaps) - they are the same sculptors after all |

As most people know, the "mass" Rohan were poor country folk with no uniform or old family pass me downs, so i think your figures look excellent. Good painting. |

Well, I would never have thought of using ancient Greek figures as Rohirrim (I mixed Romano-Brit proxies with the Official figures) but I think they work really well. It is a particualrly impressive effect as it is a "soft" conversion, apparently using paint only. I think your painting is very good and certainly has the desired effect. These are good, characterful sculpts and your painting brings this out. It is amazing how making them blonde and clothing them in green fundamentally alters their character and my perception of them. It is a useful reminder that we could all be a little more adventurous with proxy figures. |
