Post subject:  lotrscenerybuilder's Door of Durin

Hi all :)
It's been a while since i've posted on this site. Unfortunately i've been pretty busy. Now I have quite a bit of spare time, I want to get more into recreating Tolkien's world, the way Peter Jackson and Weta did. I've been looking at the movies and especially lotrscenerybuilder's site, and I have been amazed at the construction. I have an urge to build a Moria set, from the Door of Durin to the Bridge of Khazad-Dum, and then shoot some pictures of my Fellowship moving through the mines, fighting goblins and even the dreaded Balrog of Morgoth.
I have decided to start with the Door of Durin/the Watcher in the Water. I am taking the design from lotrscenerybuilder's model, as I think their models are absolutely astounding! The board will be 45cm X 45cm, and from looking at the pictures, I have made out my own plans. They only things I really need help on are The Watcher in the Water (what size it is etc.), what size the Sabertooth Hexes it is designed on are, and roughly where abouts the hexes are placed in the water.
I would greatly appreciate any help on this, and obviously lotrscenerybuilder would be the best to help :)
Thanks, and here is the link http://www.lotrscenerybuilder.org/watcher.php

Sounds a great idea and will be interesting to watch it develop. I take it you will be adding a Balins Tomb to your plans ?

yes, the main sets I want to construct are the Door of Durin, The Chamber of Mazarbul (Balin's Tomb), Durin's Causeway and the Bridge of Kazad-Dum. If, after that I still want to build more of Moria, then I'll probably do the stairway inside durin's door, and part of the great hall.

I remember ukfreddybear sculpted a watcher in the water... maybe if you send him an e-mail or PM he could give you some pointers (:

Good luck :D

I am not sure of the scale on the clicky hex LOR figures. They are large. They are smaller than traditional toy soldier scale,54mm.They may be 1/35. I do not have any to measure. I do have a 28mm watcher in the water. I don't know who made this one. It came from e-bay from Greece.

This is the only metric rule I have. You can make the thumbnail large enough to make an educated guess for the measurements.
I hope this helps.

Thanks :)
I think i'm going to make each side of the hexes 2.5cm. Would that be about right?

Also in terms of paint, how would I paint the water? And what about the watcher? I'll probably be getting the tester pots from B&Q if anyone knows them. If not then just a general shade would help
Thanks

Use scenic water! Here's a good article on Terragenesis that could help: http://www.terragenesis.co.uk/infopages/page374.html

As for the shade I would say it's probably similar to water found in caves... that is a mix of grey and sand with a little hint of green. (:

thanks for that but I think I'll just paint the water, as I think it will work better, because when i'm fighting a battle on the board, the models will have to move onto the water to chop off those dirty great tentacles and save Frodo from the big slimy beastie :)
