Post subject:  Modelling The GW Classic Weathertop/Buckleberry Ferry Board

Hi all,

I was looking at (yet) another terrain project to keep me occupied between armies and I came across in an old rulebook the Weathertop/BB Ferry dual-purpose board. Needless to say I got a nostalgia hit and realised I had to build it (even though I already have a Weathertop and Ferry).

I saw on the old website (using the WayBack machine) that they posted several construction photos of it around the place without any commentary. I wanted to know, does anyone know if they did an actual terrain article on it? Either in White Dwarf or on the website?

Thank you!

I'd love to help you out, but I'm not really remembering this board. You said it was in an old rulebook. Do you remember which one it is?

Yeah, for sure. I found it in te Return of The King book (2003/04), page 96. Let me see if I can take a photo....

I know exactly the one you mean. I've never seen any guides for building it though. I know it appeared in the Fellowship rulebook when the rules first came out, and parts of it have appeared in many publications since, usually the ferry at the bottom of the hill. This picture is the ferry section of it I think, and up the hill in the background in the fort/weathertop section.

I'm afraid I don't remember any sort of construction guide either. Maybe one of our other members knows something I don't.

There's no construction guide in the original rulebook (just thumbed through it) there's only a few pictures of the board

J.R., yes it does. It is VERY good (although some images do not load on the page.

And damn. I reckon I could probably have a guess at how to do it, I was just wondering if a lot of that guesswork could be taken out. Apparently not. Huh.....

I do not think there will be much guess work.
Brake the questions down into more manageable problems.
Like how do I make water?
How do I make reeds?
What should I make the boat from?
How do I apply long static grass?
What is a good way to make tree trunks?

You might want to PM GBHL Jamie as he is building one too. Good Luck!

I just found it out, but it is an server which has saved/stored website's and enables you to visit them. So I just visited the GW website from the time LOTR just began, I already found a nice cave troll painting guide and good terrain tips :-) SUPER!
IF you take the time, you can create a whole collection of old articles by just visiting al those old GW pages!

And thanks to everyone for their advice in lieu of finding a method. Much appreciated.

I'm also planning on building the weathertop on my game board! Please show us what you come up with!

So, thus far I have only started planning. Part of my planning when I am thinking of copying a studio board is finding every photo from every angle of every part I can find.

This might seem like an excessive amount of photos (and some of them repeated), but as you go through them you should see things (like the branch in the river and the hilltop configuration) explained in more depth by the next picture you see of it.

The other thing having done this does is see how versatile this board might actually be. In fact I can already envisage a NUMBER of different scenarios that could be played on this board - not just Weathertop, Buckleberry Ferry, and possibly a Pitched Battle.

NB: The white-card-foamboard-WIP Weathertop actually zooms in with some clarity on a web browser. Just not on my image preview application.

Very nice idea! Certainly one of the most beautiful gaming boards ever, which had me fascinated since I first saw it in the RotK rulebook back in the day!

I wish you all the best for this project! I'm going to follow this closely!

@ste: you have to play around a bit with the wayback machine. Unfortunately though for many articles the pictures haven't been archived which makes painting and modelling guides quite useless. I find it the best to go back to 2005 or so where there are tons of articles on the website and the wayback machine has a lot of them archived on different dates, making it easier to find articles.

It's a great tool but it has it's limits unfortunately. So many of the good articles have disappeared for ever unfortunately.
