Post subject:  To Paint a Gaming Board
I have a question to any and all avid terrain builders. 8)

I finally started painting my 4' x 4' board today by washing the entire board with black and then doing splotches of green wash with a brown wash to blend that in and cover any bare spaces. Of course, I left black showing as much as possible for shadowing and so far I think the board looks great. I could try taking a picture of it but the sun is already down and I'm not sure you'll be able to see anything.

I think the colors are more visible in the second picture. But then again... Also the board is darker than what is in the pictures.

The next step I believe is to start drybrushing it. Right? My question would be, what colors should I use to highlight it with? how much and where? and most important, how do I highlight it without getting lines from the brush strokes?

I hope you guys can help in any way. I think I'll post this same question in the terrain help forum as well. Thanks in advance!! :-D

Yep. When i painted my board i treated it just like a mini. Started with a base coat, put on a wash then dry brushed on the highlights.

It would be helpful if you told us what type of terrain you are attempting to portray. A summer meadow? A winter Frost thing? Mordor? What?

I can help you but I need to know what the end results needs to look like.

Oh yes. That would be very helpful. Sorry about that. :oops:

I'm looking to create a mix between grasslands and the underbrush like you see at Amon Hen.

Pictures of what I'm looking for might help better. :)

This first one is what I'm looking for, that is with the amount of grass there is but with the dirt showing in places. The second one however, shows the type of battlefield that I'm going to try and convey. I also really want to incorporate the scattered rocky outcrops that you can see in the second image.

Use flock and static grass for patches of tall grass, but for the most part, use flock.

Before you do anything else, carve out your river and place your bark chips where you want your ridges to go. You can terrain around the ridges for now, but the river bed has to go in now. Again you don't need to work on the river yet, just cut it out.

Now...groundwork. Everything else relies on it.

You should try mixing some sand into a couple of dark brown paints, like Chocolate Cherry, Bittersweet Chocolate and so on, using those cheap 2 ounce craft paints like Folkart or CeramCoat. The sand will stick to the panel and break up the surface. It will also harden, protecting your board. Regular sand from the beach or playground is fine. Mix a shot glass full into the 2 ounce craft paint. I use a plastic six ounce drinking cup to mix it in.
Add in a 50 - 50 mix of white glue and hot water and mix it up till it's all one color.
Slop it all over your board with a large brush.
You can mix in a different color browns into the original mixture to vary the colors.
You should end up with a nice sturdy board with a good base to work on.

Let this dry overnight. Two, if your not in a hurry.

After that I drybrush a color called Ochre over the whole surface. This is a yellow with some brownish tint to it. It lightens the chocolate colors nicely.
Next, I do a second drybrush using Folkart Sand color. I run this over the high points and it serves to pick out the "rocks" quite well.

Let this dry and we can move onto flocking using various turfs, static grasses and clump foliages.

Nice project.

Everyone does things differently. There is no wrong way.I am going to just give tips.

I like to use a sponge.

Dark to light I use a custom dark gray green,burnt umber,pewter gray and teddy bear tan and ivory.

I use drywall filler for texture and use the dark gray green paint while the filler is still wet.

I add details and complete most of the texture and pain before I add flock

Build your texture in stages.

The trees are not attached.

I make my own flocking. The brown texture is ground floral moss and lichen.Use as many textures as possible.

Thank you everyone for your help and advice! :D I am done with the painting part, though I may do another highlight and more shading on spots that got too much highlight. I'll start adding the flock and static grass when I get the time, however, I'm back at university and won't be going home for a while. (Thanksgiving break is over). The semester is almost over, so maybe I'll get it done towards the end of December after finals. Thanks again!

I've started to apply the first layer of flock, but the board was still drying when I took these photos. It won't be that green. There will be spots that are bare of grass. I still need to add different layers and shades to it.

This hill has more layers on it, but it still needs more diversity. (I decided to do the hill at the same time as the board.)

Looking good. Yeah my boards always start really green but I add various flocks over this to diffuse the green.

I wish it was. :( Unfortunately, I got busy after I started it and then I started working two jobs and then went back to college and haven't been back home to work on it.
I'll finish this semester in July and will have a 7 week break before the next one, but my brother is getting married in August, so I will most likely be busy helping with all that stuff, then I'm off to college again. I probably won't get to work on it till winter, :shock: which is when I started the project! I guess we'll all be surprised if I get it done before then. :-D

Surprise!! :D I got it finished!!! :D

And it didn't take as long as I thought it would to finish the board. :-D

I basically soaked the whole thing in watered down PVA glue, though I was thinking of giving it a second spray to help solidify the bigger clump foliage that is scattered around. Thoughts?

(Also, the lighter and darker spots are from the sun shining on it and the shade from the trees. It doesn't have that stark of contrast between colors.)

And here it is! Not as green as before. :rofl:

It's such a joy to finally have a project complete!! :D Now to get an army or two done to fight on it....
