Post subject:  Amon Hen revisited

"Soon he came out alone on the summit of Amon Hen, and halted, gasping for breath. He saw as through a mist a wide flat circle, paved with mighty flags, and surrounded with a crumbling battlement; and in the middle, set upon four carven pillars, was a high seat, reached by a stair of many steps." J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Rings.

Re-reading the Lord of the Rings this summer and upon reading the above passage I had a view of what I thought Amon Hen would look like. As a LOTR buff and wargamer, I thought that it would make a great set scene for a board - a seat of power on a hill surrounded by battlements. Think I would build it as what it looked like new, could imagine several scenarios using it.

Thought I would see if I could quickly build what I had in my mind with what I had in my different molds bit boxes. Had to cast a few more pieces but this is I envision when I read about Amon Hen.

Four pillars set at the cardinal direction points with a set of stairs going up to a platform with a compass rose in the middle with a seat at the center. Not a chair where you couldn't look all around without getting up.

Didn't have carven pillars or a flag stone mat so I printed off some Numenor banners to wrap around the pillars and put it on a stone mat I had.

I doubt I will ever get around to building this with better columns, more creative compass rose, battlements, support for the stairs, etc., as I have several other terrain pieces I wish to build first.

It is hard to read the Lord of the Rings now without having the movie version of characters, locations etc. in my mind so I have to make a conscious effort to read the books a little more carefully and try not to have the movie version be the only version.

That's cool, Mapper. I like your line of thinking.
Try printing those banners on tracing paper and see how that looks.
Just an idea, but I think it may help.

For large banners you can use fabric paper.

Thanks! I have used fabric paper in the past for banners and if I was to do this model I had planned to etch the design into plaster or wood.

I only printed off the banners this time because I couldn't stand looking at the roman mold columns. As it is now, I have broken apart the model and put it back into the bits box.

Here is the one I created a few years back. I amalgamized the film and book. It does make a fun objective on the board. If you check out my WIP there are step by ate posts there. Yours looks really awesome and if you ask me you should slide it to the head of your priority list. Keep up the awesome work!

I have also worked on this project. A full board takes up too much space.

This is a photo from one of the Games Days. I use it for inspiration.
