I only started with this hobby a year ago, so I guess I can enter the beginners competition for every topic. Or am I mistaken by that? What is considered to be a terrain piece? Only buildings and terrain boards or do ships, etc also count as terrain?

Update on Prizes

A huge 'Thank You' goes to Ebob for his support of the community and for the One-Ring Awards. He has kindly and generously offered to donate several prizes from his range of products, and as a result, we are pleased to announce we will be awarding prizes for the 1st place winner of each Open category, plus a special prize for the 'Committee's Choice.'
<table width="600" bgcolor="#996600" cellspacing="1" cellpadding="4"><tr><td><b>Category</b></td><td><b>Level</b></td><td><b>Place</b></td><td><b>Prize</b></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td>Best Single Miniature</td><td>Open</td><td>1st</td><td>Ebob Miniatures blister pack, 5 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td> </td><td>2nd</td><td>5 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td> </td><td>3rd</td><td>3 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td>Beginner</td><td>1st</td><td>10 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td> </td><td>2nd</td><td>5 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td> </td><td>3rd</td><td>3 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC"><td>Best Terrain Piece</td><td>Open</td><td>1st</td><td>Ebob Miniatures griffon statue, 5 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td> </td><td>2nd</td><td>5 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td> </td><td>3rd</td><td>3 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td>Beginner</td><td>1st</td><td>10 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td> </td><td>2nd</td><td>5 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC" ><td> </td><td> </td><td>3rd</td><td>3 'Gold Coins'</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#FFFFCC"><td>Best Conversion/Sculpt</td><td>Open</td><td>1st</td><td>Ebob Miniatures sculpture kit, 5 'Gold Coins'</td></tr>

A very rich prize pool indeed. And one such as this can only be maintained through the continued generosity and support of the community members. Your donations have all contributed to this, and Ebob has outdone himself with his support.

Enjoy it guys, you've earned it!

does this mean you have to enter open catogie to win a prize? so beginingers only win gold coins?

that's not totaly fair, is it? I mean, you have to enter the open competition to have an opertunity on winning an Ebob price, even if you know you're only a beginner and stand no change competing against the player with several years of experience. Why not get rid of the beginner competition in total then, cause its a waste of time and resources then.

just my 2 cents

Why is this not 'totally fair'? Yes, you have to enter the Open competition to win a prize. But everyone can enter it, which is why its an 'Open' competition.

And because it is Open to everyone, it is the one that has a tangible prize associated with it. Offering a prize to 'Beginners only' would be unfair, since experienced hobbyists would not be able to win it.

We are offering the richest LOTR online competition in the world and you are whinging that you don't get anything for being a beginner. Well, yes, in fact you do. You get to rise through the ranks of the One Ring and you get to brag to your friends that you won a major painting contest on one of the biggest LOTR sites in the world.

And maybe you get to win the Committee's Choice award too.

But if you dislike the idea of a painting contest for Beginners, don't bother entering.

Good job, guys! Everything seems to be well arranged and this has even inspired me to finish my Dain conversion. :) I only have to paint it now, and that's the fun part.

Is it all about the prizes for you? You're saying that it's not fair that the more experienced people win. You definitely didn't think much when you wrote that.

No, it's not all about winning a price for me. But it would be great to be able to compete against other beginners and have a nice price competing for. So you find it fair that in order to have a nice price instead of just some stars, you should enter the open competition and take on guys (and girls) that are painting, building terrain, making diorama's or writing scenarios for several years? I'm only in this hobby for a year, I've never done anything that resembles this, and I don't have the time some of (not to say most) the other One Ring members are able to put in to it. I'm lucky if I can paint a mini a week. And frankly I don't give a s**t what my ranking is or can be by winning some stars. And brag about winning a competition?  who cares? When I was doing car hifi competitions you could also enter in beginner, experienced and professional (shops) . And every categorie had very nice prices to win, not only the experienced. And you could only enter beginners when it was your first year of competiting. But you knew the others where beginners also so it was fair.

I think you should be grateful that Dagorlad and the others worked so hard to make this work, and that ebob is so nice giving out some prizes. It is their decision, and if you don't like it, then tough luck. Just accept it, and enter if you want to, and if you don't want to, then don't.

Just my point of view.

A few points my dear:

1. Actually, those prices were unplanned. We never hoped for so much prices, yes, much! There ARE prices. Much more then we could ever hope for! We were even happy!

2. However you said it isn't that way, but it seems to me that you really think about nothing else then those prices. Someone who's second in the best category gets 'just' coins too you know. Besides, those coins are community-based. Something you clearly don't understand.

3. The prices are bought and arranged with the aid of donations and the good heart of others like EBob. Do you really think we have those things in our hand? No way, you should be glad with these prices already.

4. If you really want prices, just go off and buy some stuff. Someone with such an attitude doesn't deserve our prices in my opinion.

Theres always one

The team who put together this competition worked really hard on it, and the effort shows. You on the other hand have come to the site and posted 7 times (3 in this thread) and then start complaining about the excellent work that is being done here. We should all be pleased that there are prizes at all, they weren't planned and they came out of the generousity of others, and you still have the cheek to complain that there aren't enough? Have you donated any prizes? Or anything at that matter? No? I thought not.

Okay guys Barduck is entitled to his opinion and has voiced it, he has been responded to by an Admin, and a guy from the competition commitee.
If he wants to keep complaining it will be dealt with, he nows has his choices and can live with them.

Back on topic.

@Barduck, watch your language. I will not tolerate that sort of response on this website - if you can't express yourself politely and with respect for others then you are not welcome here. Your opinion is valued and respected, even if we don't agree with it - so give others the same respect they give to you.

If we offered prizes for Beginners, then the amount of arguments over the definition of a''beginner' would drive everyone nuts. The last competitions we held here were cancelled because of the amount of cheating attempts. Can you imagine how much cheating there would be for a 'beginners' contest?

Other websites only offer prizes for a single category and are only open to experienced hobbyists. Some websites only offer 'points' to the winner. Our own Hall of Fame, so popular for the last 12 months, only offers bragging rights and 'gold coins'.

Personally, I think this is a pointless argument that is spoiling the beginning of what could be a great fun contest. Ok, so if you don't like the competition, ignore it.
