After a discussion with a fellow gamer today we realised that our understanding of costings could be wrong. Please tell me which is right - Osgiliath veterans - 120 points for the first company then any other companies cost 35. OR 120 points to be allowed to play them ( I assume this covers the banner bearer and cirion) then 35 per company. 4x companies = 225 OR 4x companies=260 |

We have always played it that the base cost of using your example of 120 includes 1 company. So therefore 4 companies would cost 225 |

We've always played base cost for command, then 35 per company not per additional company, Therefore 260.... |

You pay 120 pts for the Banner and Cirion, then you pay 35pts for the first (and second and so on) companies. |

a 4 company formation would cost 260: 4 companies at 35 points each + 120 for the command/special rules. This used to come up a lot in my gaming group so I got a friend with connections to ask Matt Ward- he agreed with the above. |

Hi DOCdeath, the 'internet consensus' is that: Yes it confused a few people but yes you pay the cost for every coy, including the first. So 260 (or 330 for the full) in this case. |

Comparing for example the points cost of Haldir (epic hero), to Haldir's elves (legendary formation), makes it more clear. |

4x companies=260 Also when we were trying to figure this out ourselves (we did the same thing) if you read the example armies online or I think even the sample game in the beginning of the rulebook they do the same thing, it works out the same way for any legendary, the 120 is for the hero and any upgrades (if there are any), but you still have to pay for each company |

That being the case does anyone regularly play any legendary formations? To me most of them seem overpriced. I play a mordor army and most of the legendary formations are restricted to three companies. So take for example Gorbags morgul rats. It cost 125 points to play and the benefits are only applied to a formation of three companies! Compare that to what else i could spend the 125 points on. That could get me a formation of mordor orcs six companies strong equipped with two handed weapons/bows/sheilds. It could buy me a wraith or Gothmog even. Due to the costings, legendary formations seem to get neglected in our games. Im sure they could be fun to play but they just dont seem to be worth the price! Any thoughts? |

I always thought that the 120pts(in the OP's example) included the first company as well. I was only recently told the error of my ways. |

I like to play Sharku's Hunters in small Isengard games, gives me a hero for 75 points basically in a Warg unit. Other than that I have not used much. I notice many of the higher priced ones will also give you banners or other command upgrades that I really didnt notice before. |

I think the Osgiliath Veterans give you a banner and a hero 120 pts. So that makes Cirion 95 pts, for 3 might and he makes his men immune to terror. |

oh yeah, that is one I was going to try out, I have some blisters, just haven't opened them yet. to save a little money in the short term I was going to add 1 blister of veterans to each company of MTW so 3 of the 8 figs would be veterans, try then out and eventually make all the figs veterans if I like them. I have the axemen, and clansmen, cant remember if those are legendary or rare off the top (just working on getting figs, haven't used them yet) |

They're both, you pay an extra 75 pts (I think) for Forlong and Angbor (respectively). |

I (and a few other posters, by the looks of things) regularly use Osgiliath Veterans. Blackroot Vale Archers would be another that I use (though I really need to stop thinking its a good idea) . Elfhelm's Riders.... Buhrdur... TreeBeard, the three Hunters. At least one very good Rare Formation (Axemen of Lossarnach) is a Legendary with their special Captain. I look pretty hard at units before I take them but all of these are worth it. Some like the Grey Company too - though I don't personally agree. I would say that more are not worth it than are worth it. |

That is definitely the trap I keep falling into with the Blackroot Vale Archers. The fool that I am. |

I find the same with Trolls, I dont think they are very good units and die fairly easy (sometimes) but how can you have a Mordor or Isengard army without one or two? :) |
