Well, I've been going on in this hobby for about four years now, and have come to the realization that anymore, I cannot paint figures, build terrain, play a game, or even read the rulebooks with much enthusiasm without having some sort of music playing in the background.

So...what sorts of tunes do you listen to when you paint/terrain/game?

For me, I listen to movie soundtracks (the orchestral ones, mind you, not the rubbish rock compilations ). Howard Shore's LotR, of course, John Williams's Star Wars, Hans Zimmer's Pirates of the Caribbean, and Nichols Hooper's Harry Potter soundtracks take the most time being played on my stereo.

Only occasionaly do i do this. I did it just 10 mins back funnily enough.

I tend to listen to older rock (classic rock? Im not sure) such as the Police, The Who, Pink Floyd and some less well known music such as Don Henley (Eagles drummer) and Show of Hands (a devonian folk duo, anyone heard of them?)

I dont listen to film tracks but it does sound like a good idea, maybe I will try it some time

I listen frequently to all the music that you named as well as my local classical radio, also I listen to LOTR narration while I paint, because I cant paint and read at the same time, it works really well as I can listen to the book and still paint. I have listened to the books maybe 80 times and read the books about 50

Ouch. I still haven't read my copy of LotR for my yearly read yet...been putzing around on the Harry Potter series...

But yeah. I usually go for "saga" CDs. I can put in a few CDs and not have music stop for about three hours later...and then I look at the clock and say "wow...I've been painting for three hours?...Let's put in all six Star Wars soundtracks!"

I listen to music while designing, building and painting minis and terrain, but not all the time - I do it when I want to.

As for what I listen to, film soundtracks including all the LotR (standard double dics and Complete Recordings versions, Gladiator, PoTC (all 3), Transformers (the score not the 'Rock' abhomination, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, The Police, U2, and plenty of comedy (when no sharp instruments are nearby in case I accidentally stab myself while laughing). Loads more but no point in listing them all...

well, my entire "modeling area" is based in the basement. i have a tv there, so i just put that on. I don't really watch it, but the sound and change in lights make me not feel so alone . If MTV or so pops up, i listen to music yeah . Mostly National Geographic though.

I do listen to music often when I paint, not always. Like some of you I listen to sound tracks (LOTR most of the time) but also on classical music like Mozart and the likes.
from time to time I listen to novels too, its a good thing 'coz then you can "read" and paint at the same time ;D

I don't listen a lot to music, I find it too distracting and music that is not grabbing and moving me, is not interesting enough to listen to
(when I was young I could say the billboard top 100 by heart, though)
at painting (not much the last two months, unfortunately), if, i mostly put in LOTR or the audiobook Silmarillion. though at painting eyes or tiny details I don't want to risk any orchestral shock and prefer silence (“SILENCE!”)

I reply as Nicholas Hooper' Harry Potter soundtrack was mentioned. The Order of Phoenix music is simple ingenious. I can't get the tracks out of my mind and sum them all day. (It's so much more diversified than the bombastic LOTR soundtracks where one massive wave follows the other)
I only wished the single tracks were longer!!

I'll like listen to the LotR movie soundtrack sometimes to put me in the mood to paint...anything other than that or classical music tends to get my hands to become less than steady.

a while ago I used to paint next to my pc , so I mixed and matched playing the old Battle for Middle Earth and I always put it on campaign mode so all the LOTR songs would play.

now I've gotten into the songs written by Hugh laurie and Stephen Fry , don't ask me why ......

I guess I'll be taking a major deviation from the lot of you, seeing as I listen to much more modern, power, progressive and indie rock. i find that the faster beat manages to keep you entertained for much longer periods of time - plus its just awesome to listen to

even if i could listen to that in my basement (i mostly listen to hard rock and metal), i wouldn't.
First, i'm too lazy to get a cd
Second, i tend to immitate the drums when listening to this music: not good when holding a paintbrush in one hand and a mini in the other

hahaha, good point. its either mimicking the song, or forgetting about the painting altogether - which is something I do quite alot. But whats better than sitting down and painting after some huge air guitar session
