I would actually suggest painting them black.

I am thinking about painting it close to whats on the edge "above", ie green for grass, brown for road etc.

I have been away for over a week and just came home and made a little more progress. The four first hexes here have not come very far in the work, but I think they have some potential.

I have started to build a bridge for one of the river hexes.

These ones look very good. Painting the foam prior to adding the flock has really helped. Adding a little more variation in the colours on the ruins would help as at the moment it looks a little flat.
i find it really interesting that you covered the river beds with sand. I'm working on a river myself so I'm quite interested in seeing how this works out.
