I am new to WOTR but wouldnt rangers of arnor or rangers of gondor be better suited for the archery position. Yeah you get one lower defense but you also get a better shoot value, thought its not worth much, and pathfinders, either master or woodlands for more mobility. Other than that it looks good.

One of the main roles of the two archer formations is to hold defensive terrain, which is why I prefer the higher defence.

Looks good, General Elessar. I think bows vs Rangers are 'six of one and half dozen of the other' so you might as well use the figs that come with the boxes.

I do prefer to run my Knights without their shields (the shields seldom make a useful difference IME) and in slightly larger numbers but you've tapped out your points here, so I guess you lack the option. If you were tweaking later, and had odd points - hornblowers can actually be a real boost to Cav, as well.

Good luck with it, I hope to see batreps with pics!

Looks solid and easy to acquire. I always try and get Thranduil in my lists and go second and counterspell Wings of Terror and Pall of Night or Epic Shot monsters. For the same points you could take Thranduil/Faramir/Erkenbrand/Deorine. The last two can lead the calvary and Faramir/Thranduil stick together to take out the big stuff. 12 might.

You're just jealous 'cause I've beaten you wih this army. :P

Slythar, I want to keep it reasonably thematic, so I don't want to include Thranduil.

I could wipe the floor with you if I used as many proxies as you did. My revised list would cream yours just as it did your goblins. :P

How's this for another 500pts to get it to 1500pts?

Saruman (allied) - 200pts
Warriors of Minas Tirith, four companies - 100pts
Knights of Minas Tirith, shields, four companies - 120pts
Untainted Palatinr - 75pts

I'm not sure about what to get for another 500pts; a Rangers of Ithilien any good?

I like it. Would be pretty much exactly what I would have taken.

You can never go wrong with more troops. IMO, Gondor is not a priority dependant army. All you need to do is think of them like those Roman legionary forces, checkerboard battlelines made up of interchangeable tough units.

Then the units fight as a team. In WOTR (or most wargames, frankly) a checkerboard make no sense but the army composed of flexbile (and inter-changeable) sub-units still does. You can get MT wars to work fine even in threes and I tend to run mine half as that and half as fours. Go first, go second, it matters not, the little blighters are everywhere. They are hard to punch through quickly and then the Epics bounce around to let you concentrate the attack.

If you want ambushers (and I prefer to focus on my line, for Gondor) then I think Blackroot Vale archers are the pick of the legendaries. However, I'd only take a Gondor legendary to either pad out points of let me get a Battlehost.

I was upgrade all the womt to 6c, otherwise they cant handle really strong units.
also, at 1500pts you need to get something powerful or intimidating, you have nothing like it. everything in your list is just average and from my experience taking something big and powerful beats average lists. (thats why i like the dragon, people who take average lists have nothing to stop it)

Shadowswarm, as a longtime Gondor player, I just can't agree about the big units. You do that and you give up the big advantages of your list.

I do somewhat agree about the the 'big scary' though, which is why I'd prefer Aragorn over Boromir. But Boromir's might store (desperate Heroics!) is also not bad either he intends to take Saruman for 1500pts. So at the end of the day, if his army can deal with the likes of the Dragon messily (say 475pts messily) with a bit of practice and tactics, then that is all we should ask of a 'take all comers' list. IMO.
