Nice pictures. If you wan the the bean effect try cutting a slit in a piece of cardboard and hold it over one of your lights. That might give you what you're looking for.

Of course - why didn't I think of that
Thanks

Well I snared an all metal balrog on ebay. This was one of the original versions with two part metal wings. Think these caused problems when trying to attach wings to body so might be some challenges there. Not sure if I will have to pin the wings or not.

I've made some progress putting the balrog together. It actually fitted together quite well, but I still had some green stuffing to do.

Also, this version came with the flaming sword only and I wanted a flaming whip. So, I decided to undertake my very first conversion and sculpting attempt (after being inspired by all the great work at the one ring). This was actually pretty easy. I cut the sword at the top of the clenched balrog fist and then drilled a hole into the fist. I then fashioned the frame for my whip from some wire and slotted this into the fist (the handle of the sword doubles as the handle for the whip). I then used green stuff wrapped around the frame and teased this out with a scultping 'tool' (dental pick) to make the flames.

Piccys below.

Nice whip. I have the sword arm, it's the only weapon arm that came with the metal one I got on ebay.

The whip turned out great. Nice sculpting on those flames.

Good job with the whip sculpting. I remember getting the metal balrog with sword about 4 years ago, maybe 5. I had a problem sticking it to the base as the feet were a bit funny. Is that a problem on yours?

I haven't tried to attach it to the base yet. It will likely be stuck directly to the diorama as with the other models. However because of the weight I am thinking about using green stuff to attach the feet to a surface (along with some superglue). I'm thinking I could use green stuff to attach it and also sculpt the stuff into flames surrounding its feet and coming up its legs.

Great sculpting 8) If the wings are causing you a lot of problems, GW do a bits pack of balrog wings: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... Style=lotr

Well I was away from home for 6 weeks so wasn't able to paint. However, have made some progress on Bruce (the Balrog) over the last couple of weeks. Pics below. I am sorry some are blurry. Stuck the wings on a couple of days ago - super glue and green stuff - no pinning. They are still there for now. I painted most of the body and wings separately. The model is too heavy to try to paint once wings are on - although I have a bit more to do.

Yes, will drybrush the skin with some sort of grey (I kinda like the black though) - will certainly do something with the horns. I decided to drybrush the detail in the wings rather than the standard of painting in the gaps with red/yellow. I did this for one panel and didn't like the look. I like the drybush effect better. There are chips and bits that need fixing and I need to paint over the GS etc etc. And then I need to attach the whip hand.

Will get to this asap - Bruce gets angry when I neglect him...

Gandalf for scale - sorry blurry pic. Yes, Bruce is bolted to a piece of wood to stop him escaping and killing someone

Great job. The wings look great, will have to remember to use drybrushing when if I ever get one. As far as the black goes you could add a black wash after the drybrushing to keep the black look while getting some highlighting.

Going back to some of your older work...nice diorama. Your goblins are also quite nice. Would you mind sharing how you painted their armour? Just got another box of goblins so I'm interested in trying some different things on them as to keep it from getting too tedious.

Thanks! Good luck with the painting - make sure you post pictures of your progress.

The wings are metal, but hopefully the detail is the same with the plastic ones? Good tip about the black wash - I think I will give that a try. Thanks.

It was pretty basic since they were some of the first models I painted. I decided to use Mithril Silver rather than boltgun metal or chainmail. I thought since they live in a mine full of mithril they might have the nouse to actually work out how to make armour from it (although they are only goblins). Entire model got a fairly heavy black wash and then armour was highlighted again with Mithril (drybrushed on). I then put a matt varnish on all models to give them some protection.

Finished painting the attached wings and have attached the whip. Close to finished painting this now. Still not sure what to do with the black skin. I tried drybrushing with a light grey - this looks OK on the horns but not so sure about the rest of the model. Some more piccys below. Now need to work on the terrain surrounding the balrog.

He looks great 8) I'm not too keen on his placement in the diorama, he looks like he is spectating rather than involved in it.
Anywho, keep up the fantastic work.

I agree with Cyndra on the balrog. Maybe make something seperate for this one? (Maybe a level beneath ur diorama?-)

Wow that diorama is very nice. But your poor balrog needs his own.

That Balrog is IMO, the best Balrog I've ever seen

Thanks for all the comments :puppy:

I'll have to think about whether I do a separate diorama for the balrog. I have to put some terrain at the upper level of the tomb so once I have done this things might look better. I wanted to give the impression of the balrog descending onto the characters below so he will be tipped forward and leaning more into the scene and bits of stone etc will be crumbling beneath him and falling onto those below. I'll update as things progress.
