I've had it in my head for quite a while to make a few buildings for use with GW's Legends of the Old West game. Too many other things have conspired to distract me from this goal though.

Recently, a friend suggested a game concept that caught my attention - it's titled a Cast of Thousands and is highly unusual in that it's set in a movie studio's backlot in the 1930s. Instead of fighting a battle with warriors and siege engines, the players fight to assemble a cast, a script, a camera crew and a movie set. The first to shoot a pre-defined number of scenes wins the game.

As a part of this concept, the table will have a number of predefined movie 'sets' - including a Greek temple, a Chicago street scene, a Yellow Brick Road, and a western town. This gave me a good reason to build some western buildings. Note that the 'buildings' will just be the facades, no backs to them at all - just like in the movies. So here's my first building... it's unpainted and the 'back stage' detailing is not yet finished, but I'm pretty pleased with it so far.

Thanks guys. I'm working on a saloon now - a little bit fancier and quite a bit bigger.

Great work on the building Alan, I also find the idea of Cast of Thousands intriguing. Looking forward to seeing the Saloon. It's good to see you working on terrain again.

Beautiful construction, Boss. Err, you have read 'Moving Pictures'? No worries about things coming through from the Dungeon Dimensions? C.M.O.T Dibbler not involved in any way?

One other benefit of this setting for the game is that you can have 30's gangsters alongside Trojans and Greeks, cowboys, Cecil B. de Mille and the Marx brothers.

'And.... ACTION!'

The game seems like a very interesting concept, please tell us a bit more about it when you have played a game or two.

The store is very detailed.
How did you make those plints around the edges of the roof (they probably have a name, but I hope you understand what I mean)?

Looking forward to seeing the saloon

I ran out of balsawood yesterday so I'll have to stock up again today. I'll post an update on the weekend with the Saloon - it's looking pretty nice at the moment, but will look great with a balcony and boardwalk.

@Aqan, the "cornice" (the bit along the top edge of the wall) was made from two pieces of timber, one slightly wider than the other. I'll do a close-up shot of it for you on the Saloon when I'm up to that part.

After stocking up on timber and making a bit of progress, it's time to post a WIP shot of the Saloon. Loads of work still to be done on this yet, but it's taking shape and I'm really pleased with it. Still haven't had the guts to paint the Drygoods Store yet though:

The minis are from Dixon Miniatures I think, a couple of figures I bought off eBay several years ago and painted.

Very nice looking saloon. Is the main piece just one big piece of wood with the board texture etched in?

The timber facade is a sheet of 1mm balsa glued to a piece of card and then the timber 'planking' is just scribed in. Along the top of the building you can see the planks run vertically - this is a separate piece of balsa turned 90 degrees, so the grain runs vertically.

Hey wow, thanks for the link Matt, great stuff! I love the herd of Texas Longhorns being driven down the main street - wonderful.

They are some very nicely done buildings that really look the part - inspiring.

I done some painting me.

The bottom half of the building isn't finished yet, and it needs some highlighting and a bit more weathering, but it's coming along nicely.

The word 'Eureka' is freehand, yes, but the rest was done on a printer.
