Hey guys!

With the advent of the new Warband rules, I thought I'd try my hand at a Dwarf army, so without further ado, behold!

WARBAND 1
Dain Ironfoot,

6 Dwarf Warriors, Shields

5 Dwarf Warriors, 2h weapons

1 Dwarf Warrior, Banner

WARBAND 2
Balin, Son of Fundin, Lord of Moria (w. Durin's Axe)

8 Iron Guard

WARBAND 3
Dwarf Captain

9 Dwarf Warriors, Shields

So, what do you think? Any good?

I think you need more models, drop one big hero and get two smaller ones, each leading their own Warband.

Alrighty, but if I take out Balin, that only frees up enough points for...2, 3 Dwarf Warriors? I suppose I could remove Dain instead, but I'm loath to do that since he has D9, a 12" stand fast and 3 wounds. I'd be worried about my ability to take out big gribblies if he was taken out.

I'd drop dain n take gimli... infact I did a similar force at 500pts this weekend
Gimli,
4 iron
6 kazad

Balin
10 bows

King throwing weapons
3 iron
5 kazad
2 shield dwarf

or something similar...
It works well. To add 100pts. I'd take 2 banners and more iron guard.

You really want to be having 40 models at 600pts not 30. Dwarves don't need banners IMO.

well 6 iron on my list would bring it to 39 models and 10 points for an elven cloak for gimli.
Or 3 iron and 3 kazad gives pts for Durin's axe for Balin.

If you trade Dain (who is awesome, you really shouldn't take him out) for the King's Champion, you get 2 banners for "free". Since dwarves don't have any spears, banners are incredibly useful for them. 30 models for 600 points isn't that bad, what with the new warbands.

And the King's Champion is badass. It also frees up 25pts from my other kinband, which allows me to do this:

WARBAND 1
King's Champion

6 Dwarf Warriors w. Shields

6 Dwarf Warriors w. 2h weapons

WARBAND 2
Balin, w. Durin's Axe

8 Iron Guard

WARBAND 3
Dwarf Captain, w. Shield

6 Dwarf Warriors w. Shields

5 Dwarf Warriors w. 2h weapons

Comes to 597pts, I think. 34 models, two fairly good heroes. Only thing is, no ranged support and no wizardry. But wizardry isn't something pure-Dwarf lists do. Do you think the lack of ranged attacks will hurt?

You can always use the 3 points to swap 3 2h weapons for bows. If you really want a bit of shoot for mounted hero removal... but I dont think it will be missed much.

The Banners that come with the Champion count as Wariors in his warband if I'm not mistaken so you'll have to move 2 Dwarves.

Definitely bring in ranged support. Dwarf Rangers are incredibly powerful archers, well worth the 10 pts. Trade 6 of the 2Handers for rangers and that'll come out to 600.

Dwarf rangers are just slightly harder normal rangers.
Dwarf bows are harder still, with stronger bows, but worse shoot value and range.

It depends on your scenario but I love dwarf rangers as you can retreat into rocky areas if horses head your way

Dwearf Rangers and Dwarf Archers have the same str bows, but the rangers have an extra 6in range, as well as a better shoot value.

Unless they changed it in the new armybooks, the Dwarf longbow sacrifices a point of Strength for the added range.

Really? I always thought that since it was a "longbow" it had 3 strength! This makes me happy!

Lol usually it makes people sad instead... because it's the same rules as a normal bow but costs 1pt more than an elf bow. I remember ages ago their was like a thread about this and people complaining and stuff.. I think that everyone found out the reason it costed more was becuase of the rangers increased shoot value and special rule, which wasn't really included in the points cost of the basic model but in the bow cost.

I'm happy because I never use them, but one of my regular opponents does, all the time. I think it might only 2 points now, not sure, but that would still include the cost of the accuracy upgrade in it.

Honestly, if I were going to put ranged support in, I'd go regular Dwarf bowmen. The 6" reduction in range and worse Shoot is made up for by the increased strength of the shot, and the durability of the bowman (def. 6 instead of def. 5). But in most of the games I've had, the battle has been just a big cluster of models over the centre line, and shooting hasn't come into play very much. Anyone else noticed this?

** Anyway, this is my final list, that I'm reasonably happy with given my available resources and so forth:

WARBAND 1
Dain Ironfoot

5 Dwarf Warriors - Shields

1 Dwarf Warrior - Banner

6 Dwarf Warriors - 2h weapons

WARBAND 2
Balin - Durin's Axe

8 Iron Guard

WARBAND 3
Dwarf Captain

8 Dwarf Warriors - Dwarf Bows

2 Dwarf Warriors - Shields

I'm fairly happy with the numbers (33 including Heroes), and ranged support. Only real problems I can see are Monster-killing (nothing above str 4, but eh, my only option is to ally in an Ent or some Great Eagles, and that's more hassle than it's worth) and vulnerability to spells, but there's once again nothing I can really do about that.

Anyway, thank you all for your comments and critique, I had several other lists which I will cycle through when I get the models (namely the King's Champion army, which was a close 2nd), as well as a Dwarf Ranger force.

For me its the same issue. I only take the DW w/bow.

I do 1 of 2 tacts: Have the bowmen follow base-to-base with another warrior till the engagement and then I either move the archer into base contact or try to snipe any of the enemy supports I can.
The 2nd option: Is to move them in a tight formation, all in base contact and use them to defend a flank. All the while moving them to wrap around the enemy line and try to get "trap" rolls.

My rolling for shooting is abysmal, so taking a ranger over a warrior for range isn't a factor. I go for the survivability.

Also, I have yet to play a game that has a lot, more than 1 terrain piece, that is considered difficult terrain. My regular opponent doesn't care much for terrain....and I LOVE it. Makes all the world of a difference...but alas, I"m in a area starving for LoTR blokes.
