2) The MoM set is good but is showing its age (it's got to be like 10 or so years)back
10 yeras! It's nowhere near that old, it was only around 2006 that it came out. That was the first release after I started, and I still see it, (and everything since) as being new.
I had just assumed it came out when the film came out in 2001 but having looked it was 2005 which means it is still 7 years old and the models do lack the detail of GW more recent models in all their ranges and I just think having a new great looking starter boxset would do GW good for sales, customer satisfaction etc
It came out with the Hardback rulebook and was actually the first non-movie starter set. Fellowship of the Ring was Last Alliance stuff I believe, The Two Towers was Rohirrim and Uruks and the Return of the King was Warriors of Minas Tirith and Orcs. The Return of the King set was one of my first purchases, I still remember those days fondly. Of course, it was nothing like it is today, just 24 WoMT and 24 Orcs and some basic scenarios for playing with them (which generally included nominating one model the Captain). The MoM set was revolutionary in it's contents. Then when it started getting older and needing a redo, WotR came around and it looked like SBG would be dropped as a specialist game.
I wouldn't be surprised to see The Hobbit boxed set containing all of Thorin's Company in plastic form, some sort of basic enemy (whatever is most common - goblins?) and an introductory booklet. Maybe a journey book as well, though that might be sold separately. Either way, I feel like this would be GW's release of the Dwarves, maybe releasing them in mounted/foot resin packs as well. It would force anyone who wanted to join in the hype to buy an expensive set and then additional models needed for the scenarios while still keeping it nice and neat as a game extension.
And to the original question about release date, though everyone here says December, on Warseer it's generally believed to be November:
January: Vampire Counts army book
February: Vampire models
March: Tyranid and Space Wolves model waves
April: Empire army book
May: Dark Angels or Chaos Codex
June: Necron wave
July: 40K 6th ed
August: 40K model wave
September: Warriors of Chaos book
October: Empire models and Dark Angels or Chaos codex - whichever wasn't released in May
November: Hobbit!
December Warriors of Chaos model wave and 40K model wave
That was from a little while ago and some of the rumours have panned out to be not true, though the accuracy isn't too bad. But I think it's been cited that previously with the other movies, models have hit the shelves before release and so November will be dedicated to the Hobbit and creating as much hype as possible.
