October 10 - The Return of the Ring

October 20 is the day that Frodo and Glorfindel (Arwen in the movie) crossed the Bruinen and reached the safety of Rivendell, hotly pursued by the Ringwraiths.

It is also the day, in 1955, that the Return of the King was published for the first time.

Well, the One Ring is returning in all its glory on that day, after being lost in the wilderness for what seems like an Age. Yes folks, that's the Go Live date for our new look forums.

It will be a two-phase approach, where firstly I will be upgrading the 'skin' of the site and fixing some irritating bugs. And thr second phase (some time next year) I will be adding some of those lovely features we used to have, like Gold Coins.

So, let the countdown begin...

Good stuff! I would say install a countdown timer to the big day, but on second thoughts that will require even more coding so don't worry about it.

Great news! It's nice to have a solid date to look forward too, rather than just 'sometime in the future'.

Actually, since a couple of you have had a sneak peek at it already (Drum, I'm looking at you) and may have an unfair head start, I have added no less than three furbies to the new site. So, when the site goes live - the first person to show me a screenshot (or screenshots if necessary) of them will win a LOTR blister pack.

Work is progressing at a good pace and I am nearly finished ("finished" is such a misleading term). A few things have occurred over the past few days that may cause a little confusion though - notably, some lists that appear in the articles have suddenly turned red. This is due to me setting up the style sheet in readiness for the new site and it screwed up the existing look a bit. It's only temporary, so please bear with me a little longer.

The other thing that has happened is that I have fixed some bugs with the article library and people can edit their own articles and upload images once more. We should start to see a steady flow of articles again once the new site goes live - starting with a nice conversion article from BilboOfTheWhiteTower.

Ok, hold on to your hats guys, we're going live early. October the 10th is our new date for turning on the new look site!

Why early? Well, because a) it'll be ready by then, and b) it was BilboOfTheWhiteTower's birthday - and what better way to celebrate Bilbo's birthday than by having a party!

October will be a busy month for me: back to work, the roll out of digital tv finally reaches Schloss Dorthenberg (in 2 parts made even more complicated as we also get the Republic of Ireland HD digital in addition to the UK HD so there will probably be a lot of cursing as your truly gets to retune every tv in the house... and will probably get phonecalls from relatives asking can I come and fix their too.
Looking forward to the new site design (very many fond memories of the old one we had for yonks).

Ok, just to let you all know, the exact time that the site will go live is 11:30pm on Tuesday the 9th of October GMT. It's half an hour before midnight of the 10th because, basically, I have to go to a meeting and won't be able to turn it on precisely at midnight (it's 10:30am here in sunny Adelaide), so we're going live a little early.

Remember. there's a blister pack for the one who can find the 3 hidden furbies (and it doesn't include the smiley, since that's not hidden). The blister pack will be from GW's new Hobbit range, so the winner will have to wait a couple of weeks to receive their prize (since I can't get it any sooner than anyone else).
