Future All Cav Rohan 500pts

So chaps, might be getting ahead of myself here, but once I've completed my 500pt Grey Company force, I'm thinking of a 500pt all Cav Rohan force led by Erkenbrand (I've got his model en route) I like the Eomer and also captain models. Any suggestions guys?

Guessing with new bow rules with Rohan it would be 1000pts with 100% bows?

I'm pretty sure you'd stil be better taking some infantry because RoR are still underpowered, especially as archery in general is terrible.

Hmmm I guess so, although the plan was to use this force to support a Grey Company army if I start to play larger games and more out of love for Rohan as perhaps they should have been - predominately mounted.

Any ideas how I could put together this 500pt force? Might not be terribly effective but still.

Well for startes you'd definately be wanting Erkanbrand, and you should upgrade some RoR into redshields.

It is however quite late, and so I don't have time to work out a full army list for you. I could do tomorrow though, if noone else wants to help you.

I for one do not envy you as a Rohan player, I know it is diffiicult, always has, but it is a bit better nowadays.

Something like:

Erky + 4 Riders redshields and 2 rrg
Captain + " " "
Captain (foot) + Outriders on foot and WoR w/ spears - or helmingas if you get Grimbold.

Got an Erkenbrand on the way off eBay, hence the whim to get a Rohan force in the thought process. Lots of Rohirrim to be found on eBay too, much easier to find than Rangers of the North!

Yup, having read this forum ten times over since finding you lot and being encouraged to get started, that lack of envy towards Rohan and cavalry is a reoccurring theme.

But as I say, it's more out of a love for the models and for Tolkein's Rohirrim

Same with the Grey Company List.

So, thoughts on an all cavalry force at 500pts (thematic reasons only)

Warband 1 -
Erkenbrand (horse)
6 Westfold Redshields

Warband 2 -
Captain of Rohan (horse, heavy armour, shield, throwing spears and bow)
6 Riders of Rohan

Warband 3 -
Captain of Rohan (horse, heavy armour, shield, throwing spears and bow)
6 Riders of Rohan

Leaves me with 35 points to
a) Equip all but 1 Rohirrim with a throwing spear (or 501 with everyone)
b) 2 x mounted Rohan Royal Guard (with throwing spears)

Have given the Captains everything wargear wise as the shield and heavy armour are going to force strength 4 attacks to roll sixes, plus if they're leading what effectively amount to a skirmish based force who's tactics will live and die based upon the ability to move in and out of ranges, they might as well join in the shooting too.

Had fancied Eomer but even he is too expensive for an all mounted 500pt force.

so probably thinking a) 501pts, 21 cavalrywith 21 bows (RoR now ignore bow limits) 21 throwing spears, 7 might

Thoughts?

But I think you have too many captains, you can put more than 6 RoR in a warband, and that would let you add some elites like Sons of Eorl or RRG, and upgrade one of the captains to Eomer.

Thanks for your helpful comments Whafrofg, always enjoy your insight! That's fab about the Erkenbrand upgrade, didn't realise that it could apply to all!

All good advice, I don't really know enough about sons of eorl or rrg as waiting on the sourcebook. How do they perform? Do they count as heroes and have their own warband or would they need to be added to a hero led warband?

Something like
Eomer
2x rrg
10 WF RS

Erkenbrand
2x SoE
10 WF RS

not got army builder in front if me but will Di proper calculations later tonight

RRG and SoE are warriors. RRG have heavy armour and the bodyguard rule...always useful for charging monsters. SoE have an extra attack, higher Str, and move faster, but they're expensive.

Erkenbrand (mounted)

8 x Westfold Redshields (8 throwing spears)

Thoughts on second attempt?

I think it's a solid list. The only minor comment I have would be to include a Son of Eorl in which warband since your army will be focusing on hitting power. Remember to pick your fights prudently and using Heroic Moves only when absolutely necessary.

I was just reading the GW Cavalry tactica on WD 375 by the way!

The list looks solid as it is. Lucky for you grey company make decent allies for rohan infantry, although the warband system slightly ruins this

No, Rohan needs a standard spear option for it's infantry, or, as would be more logical considering rohan is the only army with throwing spears, make throwing spears behave like normal spears AND throwing spears woooah.
