Last night I cleaned one up and painted it with a simple but effective aotd scheme.
Pictures later. :)

Nice work, but why make them left handed?

Why not?

10% of people are left handed. They deserve representation in the world of fantasy wargaming miniatures.

He is a hero, so I won't be producing a whole horde of left-handers. My next mini may be right-handed or holding the sword in both hands - I like that idea, maybe sweeping it round to his left or right shoulder or waving it threateningly infront of him.

The main reason for him being left handed was that I looked at the banner bearer and just imagined a sword in his upraised left hand, pictured a shield in his left... and away I went.

I can't see a problem with lefties. I did a few left handers on my AotD troop conversions. The only possible downer I can think of is if you want to do weapon swaps with existing minis as they are usually right handed. Maybe that is what Hithero was hinting at?

Maybe.
However, it is still possible to swap weapons, just not the hands with them. It's what I did with the sword in this mega-conversion. I cut off the sword hand then chopped of parts of the hand to make a grip for the sword. Next I drilled a hole in the left hand and fixed the sword in place. Bingo!

Okay, here are some photos of my dodgy painting! This mini is really calling out for a more colourful and imaginative paint job, but I've done him like this to fit in with my gw aotd.

The front

A close up of the worm on the breastplate

The back

A close up of the dragon on the back of the cuirass. I've enlarged it and rotated it so you can see it more clearly. There are two dragons back to back. Their wings meet in the middle of the model's back.

The dragon pattern is very clever and I like the paint scheme. Not too grey, not too green. just right. He'd make a nice Barrow wight too I reckon. I need to get me two or three of these (top halves) for my last few riders of the dead.

Nice. That's about as good as you can get for that colour scheme for the dead. (Though I personally prefer other scheme's with some more colour in them)
It's great to see it painted up, it helps to make all that lovely detail you sculpted stand out. Looking at it now I can say that you did a great job on the shield. Wood is very hard to sculpt, getting that right texture and randomness and yet keeping it sorta orderly....yah. Good job on it. :yay:

Fantastic job, he actually looks a bit more frightening than GW's models :yay:

Wow that's a very well sculpted figure. I must be very satisfy to have it in your army.

My mum gave me a wraith on winged beast for my birthday. :)

I've started painting the wings - a blue undercoat, with washes over the top. I want it to be very dark but with a bluish tinge showing through, a dirty, oily/greesy colour.

I've just bought some metal morgul knights on ebay (5 of them). Does anyone know what the retail price for these was before the plastic ones came out? It appears GW no longer sell the metal ones.

Cheers,
Nathan.

The swordmen looks good and I'm also looking forward to your wraith on fellbeast.

The morgul knights where 50 euro.

I think it was 20 quid for a box of 5, but I could be wrong. They were only released for 18 months before being pulled in favour of the plastics.

They were 50euro so I don't think they were 20quid.

I've had a load of riders and warriors of Rohan for years and not done anything with them. After a long break from the hobby, I'm back and painting.
What started it was finding a wicker blind in a charity shop, which got me thinking about pallisade fencing that might suit a Rohan fort. After mulling it over, I got down to some good old making - Stanley knife out, sheets of card, pots of glue...

Here's what I've done so far, with a close up of some of the stonework that I did last night.

Nathan,

It's great to see you back! The stonework that you've completed so far looks really great. What method are you using to make it?

I'm glad you like it.

I'm using a miniature angle grinder to shape tiny individual blocks of local granite. ;)

Actually, it's much easier than that, a technique similar to that which Alan uses. Instead of using polyfilla, I apply a thin layer of Milliput and mark out the stones roughly. Then I leave it to harden. Just before it's fully set I use tools to shape the stones and add some battle damage etc.
