Does anybody have a good way to use the New release Texture paints as I just used one for the first time and got a rather disapointing result.
Are they really this bad? or are you meant to pile tons on to the base and use it up quickly?

Cheers :legolas:

Drybrush it with a lighter colour, either Codex Grey/Dawnstone and/or Fortress (or the new equivalent)

Try coarse pumice or extra coarse pumice art medium by Golden for more prominent texture. It comes as a white texture paste and you mix a small batch with whatever color you want to use. Although the smallest jar available is 8 ounces, it is more economical than GW texture paint in the long run. Golden crackle paint is awesome and easy to use as well. Once dried, the result is like cracked, dried earth. Have fun with basing...

It looks like you've tried to brush it on like a paint. Don't! :D

Use a medium drybrush and scoop/stipple it on to the base. Because the texture paints don't have actual sand or grit in, if you brush them on they go smooth- you have to let it clump by dabbing it on. It takes a bit of practice but once you've got it you can make some awesome looking bases.

You will use more this way, but a single pot looks like it could do the majority of a 40K army. So should be perfect for several SBG warbands.

Mate, just go for the normal sand & PVA combo, it's just so much cheaper! The whole 6$(AUS) per pot, plus the fact that the coverage is just so poor, means that you're just throwing your money down the drain :| Not only that, but how long did you have to spend applying that stuff? It just seems incredibly inefficient to me IMO.

I actually like the texture paints, it gives a nice irregular texture.
I've always used sand but when I'm out ill give texture paints a go, with some work it'll look better i think.

thanks i will try stippling the texture paint on next time. Yes i think the pva, sand combo is easier too texture paints are certainly quicker though, just thought i would give one of the new groups of paints a try :)

I was able to mess around with a texture paint, and I liked it. It took me to coats of it to get get it the way I wanted, then I just dry brushed with one of the dry paints, and was done in less than half the time it usually does with PVA and sand, though it's not quite as nice looking. I also used it on the cloak of my haldir for a kind of weathering effect.

Could you post a photo of the base, PoW? I'd like to see how it looks like when it's working as it should be.

Yeah, it would be nice to see some comparisions of how they look. I would say that (from what I've heard/seen) that the texture paints are faster, and can get a pretty good look (once you figure out how), but they cost a lot more than sand+PVA, and don't always look as good. :)

Glad to see this post as I was going to post a related question.

I have painted up some hundreds of figs and have left the basing to the end ! I was going to pva and sand in a factory type manner, but have been considering textured basing (whether GW or vallejo whoever).

Considerations for me are speed to base, durability, end result and also cost to a certain extent. Would welcome opinions ?

I suggest woodland scenic earth. Its already painted to brown. I think one layer pva is not enough. First use pva, but on the earth. Then when it dries, use some watered pva again, cause if you dont, some of the sand will fall off later.

Here you can see it under the warg

And here is under orcs

Some of my bases are damaged in the past, so I will use another thin water layered pva again to fix the sand. Of course after this you will need matt varnish, cause the pva is glossy.

I can take a look at that woodland scenic earth, having it precoloured can take some time off painting but I would still need a light drybrush over it ?

I found from one suppliers' details as follows:

Woodland Scenics Earth Blend £5.70
Supplied by Woodland Scenics
T50 is a plastic bag containing 54 cubic inches
T1350 is a plastic shaker tub containing 50 cubic inches

That sounds like a fair bit of material, however can't tell if it's more like a flock (wouldnt need drybrushing) rather than a grit.

Well, it depends on you. For instance, if you want to make it quickly, you just flue the sand. If you want some nice highlight, then you drybrusd. To drybrush the base doesn't take more than few seconds, really. I used drybrush under the wargs, but I didnt do the same under the orcs, as you can see.

Another thing to remember with the WLS stuff is that there are several sizes and colors to choose from. So you do not need to paint it black when you can just buy black etc. I agree with Bastion that a second layer of PVA helps with keeping the stuff on. With my method of basing ( glue on base and dip into a mix of turf and WLS dirt ) some of it falls off over time, not a lot but it does.

Sorry I haven't posted the picture yet, it got kind of pushed to the back in the rush to get Haldir done and posted. Hopefully I can get it up later today, maybe.

So much for posting pictures soon :P
Anyway, here it is.

I personally think it looks pretty good, and would look even better with grass and stuff on it. I still prefer sand to it, but it's decent.

Thanks for posting it! Better late than never! :)

I still haven't tried it myself, I'm trusting in the good old sand.
