I had not made that connection. I can't say "hot magma " with out thinking of Dr. Evil 8) I wanted to be a geologist when I was a boy. Took under graduate courses as well. Sadly I went in another direction. You mentioned your bridge. Do you have a photo?

Not a geologist though I have top scores in Geology and Geography from my grammar school days (long long ago... almost geologically long ago). I also climb and wander around hills, cliffs and mountains a lot and the old interest persists. I used to drive the teachers crazy by hand drawing full 3D cross-sections instead of 2D versions which is the best they could manage.
I should have become a geologist or an archaeologist (think Indiana Jones with The BAZ00KA), not a mainframe computing sufferer.
On the colours changing depending on how the mines were lit - yes, very true, but then we all see that in photography when pictures are taken indoors without flash, relying instead on artificial light. Incandescent bulbs give everything an orangey tone, fluorescents make them greenish - it is all to do with the colour temperature of the source. And when a large area is lit only by one relatively small source, we lose the ability to distinguish colours, becoming capable only of grasping the basic shapes, hence the greyish palette used for those sequences in the film.
I just realised I am starting to sound like Sheldon Cooper. I'll stop typing :)

I have not seen that last IJ film in full - it has been on tv several times but I always seem to miss about 2/3 of it... and it just doesn't have the same appeal as the original trilogy.
Briefly back to geology - I visited Arches National Park where the sequence at the start of The Last Crusade was filmed. A photographers paradise.

Thanks for the nice comments.
The geology aside was fun. I found some inspiration for a project my brother wants me to do for him.
I have been under the weather An old back injury has made it difficult for the last few days. I am catching up with my reading.

Hope your back feels better soon! Terrain building is hard on the back with all the standing and leaning, I've found.

Take it steady mate and I hope you return to full health quickly. Looking at the positive, this will be a good time for some research.

I am going to take it easily for a few more days. Thanks for your concern.
Here is where I am. I need to finish up the fore ground and make the pins so that the stair can be damaged during play. I did not use the flash so the colors are close to final on the back drop.

Image

There are several parts missing from the stair. They will need to be pinned in place so they can be removed so the bridge can fall.

Image

I am going to make this the edge of the base so that when I add the bridge the magma will look better.

Image

I will pin a few more details to the top and add the roof.

That is all of the Parts for this section. I will finish up the paint. And start making the columns for the Hall. I am going to finish the hall before I start gluing Balin's tomb together.
Thanks for the nice comments Crucium Giger and Gandlaf the Grey 8)

I was wondering is the Pledge floor care a clear lacquer, i use a product in the UK called Pledge "Klear" its crystal clear and use it for sealing in washes on Tamiya/airfix kits between oil and acrylic washes.

If it is what do you use it for?

Plaster soaks up the water in the paint. If you thin the paint too much the binder breaks down. So I use the pledge with future shine as a paint thinner. I also make washes with it. The Woodland Scenic pigments don't have a binder at all. I use the pledge as the binder instead of matt medium unless I am also adding flocking. The pledge is shiny but that is not a problem with plaster.

This link explains the principles. He also has information in the text about brand names in the UK and other countrys.

That will be a sublime background for photos of the Balrog, the Fellowship, Moria goblins. A bit of strategic lighting for the flames and 'lava' glow to add to the atmosphere. This is very deonstraive of why PJ & Co went for 'Bigatures' for many of the large pieces in the LotR films as they could get so much detail and interest into something that could be filmed in scores of different ways.
