Also, if you might up a to wound roll requiring two dice rolls (eg a d6 roll of 6 and a 4+) the single might point effects both dice rolls.

Gil-Galad and Rúmil, need I say more? They will beat anything together, and for only 210pts!! But added to that I would say some dwarf heros, because they can help to hit hard with all if their +1 axes for no penalty.

A horn blower should be critical on anyones list who wants to up the chances of the Balrog getting charged.

Durin has a horn and can upgrade regular Dwarves to have the fearless rule as long as he is on te battle field.

Out of Thorin's Company the only one I'd really recommend is Dwalin. His Strength Value combined with his Burly rule (I think he's Fearless too) means he should be able to wound a trapped Balrog fairly easily. Whilst Thorin excels against Orc heroes with Orcrist, I'd say that Dwalin's sheer physical power would make him more useful than Thorin against a demon of the ancient world!

Actually I would say that he's a definate must. Strength 5 with a +1 to damage and 3 attacks.

Ori's Deadeye rule could make him quite useful against the Balrog. Obviously you can't rely on him to take it down, but he could get one or two wounds in with lucky 6s.

a dragons fire breath and one shot it if u have a dragon and u would also have 50 points to use on orc or murgal knights or goblins (your choice) its basically a 3-4+ to hit and a 4+ to wound cant be resisted since its not magical so u will have a 50-50 chance to wound it. and also might can be used to increase your odds

H does have 3 will, so a dragon can potentially get 3 succesful hits with breathe fire!

No one here has talked about druzag plus shelob and spider queen yet
the math
turn 1 bestial fury, no worries for charging
turn 2 combat with balrog enrage beast shelob
with F10 S10 A5(FOR CHARGING)
its then 50/50 for shelob and spider queen to win combat
lets say the win the combat (which means the balrog on the prone0
so shelob alone would get 10S10 attack with re-roll no wounds when wounding 50/50 anyway.
In my humble opinion this is THE dirtiest trick in the game.
and the only model immune to it is the mumak

But if she loses, he then hits her with a 3+ to wound (rending), or he throws her to knocked both spiders down. After getting wounded a few times, Sheolb runs off. Yes, it's potentially EXTREMELY powerful, but it's also rather risky.

Well if she loses she can't be thrown because she would be stronger(you can't hurl an enemy with a higher strength) and also even rending she still gets the bonuses of 6+ save and no running away due to bestial fury

Back in LoME it was an illegal alliance, but now anything goes its brutal really
failing that
lets not forget shelob could hurl the balrog(maximum of 7") provided your willing to gamble on that(the loss of so many attacks seems wasteful), and with the balrogs base size he can take out a whole warband when hurled.
Hideous amounts of carnage (especially off a cliff)

4 morodor trolls with axes an hammers would work pretty nicely, could try piercing strike to get potentially S10 with the troll and then rend or hurl him

This actually leads to a question I recently had, can you channel Beastial Fury? The rules for it state it works exactly as Fury in the main rules except that the units that can benefit it are different

uruk hai crossbows are quite effective against the balrog
you could field a full warband of them and still have plenty of feral uruk hai led by a shaman, vrasku and lurtz

While I agree that Druzhag + Shelob/Spider Queen IS effectvie, I get the feeling that the real question is actually how can a regular, all purpose list, defend against big models like the.

For the good side, I would say Rumil, not jsut because of him but because having f5 spear support is useful anyway, and Rumil can lead both armoured and un-armoured elves. For evil, I would say bat swarms + a fight 5 hero. Here is a regular 400pt list I reckon could take on the balrog:

Durburz, Wild Warg chief, Goblin Shaman
11 prowlers with shield
10 goblin spearmen
1 goblin
1 bat swarm

The bat swarm halves the balrogs fight value, and the warg chief calls a heroic strike so he definitely will win if a 6 is rolled, surround the balrog with prowlers, who get +1 to wound, and then tear that bad boy up.

Of course just playing the objective instead will win you unless if you are playing lords of battle or something.

I got fixated on the smashing barlog bit.
tbh if you are going to go for the bat swarm option you may as well go a unit with F6 to begin with, and lets face a warg chief only has the 1 might point;
in which case a dweller in the dark or cave troll are simply better options.

if you want a good option go with something like this(anti balrog list)
durin(F6 killing machine/harder than nails)
12khazad(bodyguards with axes and S4)
Bilbo(with the ring he can effectively act as a bat swarm)
and theres 48 points to spare

For harad, I would go with any of these options in combination with each other
Mahud raiders (with a haradrim/Black numenorean hornblower)
Abrakaan guards( S4+1to wound is nice)
Golden king( you could make the balrog potentially flee)
Taskmaster(usefull for free heroics)
Dalamyr(A3S4 re-roll failled to wounds)

I once killed a balrog with a mounted mahud king and his raider friends simply because of the instant S4 hit
