I'm just reading up in preperation for next weekends EFGT scenario in which Bilbo makes his debut. It mentions that he has the Ring and to read the rules on pg73 of the rulebook.

My question is can Bilbo charge enemies whilst wearing the ring? If so do they attack back? Do they have to take a courage test as if they were charging him?

Is there any reason why Bilbo shouldn't just put the ring on and leave it on for the entire game seeing as 'it has not yet awoken' ignores the downsides of wearing the ring?

Any help much appreciated :)

Thanks! I thought as much but just felt like I was missing something.

I was going to make an 'invisible' Bilbo (well just an empty flocked base) but if he's going to spend the whole game invisible I won't bother.

Can Bilbo contest an objective while wearing the Ring?

It does not say that he can't, but I like your logic!

What, Bilbo spending most of the battle being invisible and staying out of harms way? That sounds.. just like the description of him at the Battle of the Five Armies really. Very book-accurate, I like it!

This question is answered fairly clearly on page Pg.73: “If an enemy wishes to charge the Ringbeaerer while wearing the Ring it must pass a courage test applying a penalty of -1 to the roll for every inch that the Ringbearer is away from the foe.”

I’m only bringing this attention because Denizen incorrectly answered "No" unless I misinterpreted the question being ask.

Armand, you are reading it slightly incorrectly. Basically he was asking if they needed to take a courage check after being charged by Bilbo, the answer to which is of course no (as models can't disengage from combat once they have been engaged unless someone dies).
If they were to be the ones charging, yes they need to do a courage check, as is clear in the rules.

Yeah, the rules are fairly clear, but it just seemed like there should be more to wearing the ring. It just seems a bit weak.

I would have thought that weraing the ring would render you completely invisible and therefore invincible against everything except Ringwraiths and Sauron.

Seems a bit strange that you can be attacked at all to me. But I'm sure theres a good reason in terms of game balance for it.

Thanks for the clarification!

Interesting to note that the rules for the Ring under Frodo’s profile in the Free Peoples Sourcebook follows that sort of mindset: while wearing the Ring, he can neither charge nor be charged by enemies who cannot see him.

Of course I imagine this other set of rules for the Ring is no longer valid because Frodo’s profile in the Hobbit Rulebook probably follows the rules listed on page 73 although I could be wrong because I don’t have the hardcover version with all the profiles.

As for making sense of the new set of rules you could always just imagine that they are tracking his footprints. Hmm, or I wonder if you can smell someone who is wearing the Ring?

When Bilbo is chased by Gollum (or rather the other way around, trying to find an exit!), Gollum can hear and smell him indeed - the Goblins guarding the door could even see a shadow.

Tell that to my Aragorn, Shagrat, Goblin King, etc ... who all got their Fight value halved due to the fact they were fighting invisible Gollum.

Luckely the rules no longer state that he can move through models, models can only move through him!
