Hey everyone,
I've been looking through the GW web store lately and wondered what material the miniatures there are actually made of nowadays. I assumed it would be all finecast/resin (haven't ordered anything in years), but to my surprise I saw some miniatures there that were at least described as being made of metal, see

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Celeborn-Lord-of-Lothlorien.

Now some others do actually say something like "finely detailed resin", so no questions there, but for most miniatures no material is given, for example:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Wood-Elf-Command.

Does anyone know wether there is a way to see which miniatures are made from what material? I much prefer metal for the weight. Or am I overlooking something?

Has anyone ordered metal miniatures from the web store recently?

A big hint is that the metals were usually sold in sets of 3 and had 3 different castings. If you look at the FC or finely detailed resin, you will notice they are sold in packs of 4 and there is a repeat of one of the minis included. Anything from the Hobbit range was not cast in metal. Hope this helps.

If I'm not mistaken, most models that transitioned from metal to resin will mention "highly detailed resin" or somesuch in their descriptions; those that didn't normally won't mention the material at all (unless of course specifically saying they're metal, in which the mystery is solved instantaneously). Price should also be a reasonable indicator...

If you're wondering about a specific figure, just ask and somebody will hopefully know. Quite a few of the LotR figures have always remained in metal. (The Wood Elf command being one of them.)

Great! Thanks for the quick responses. I might order some miniatures then, we'll see :)

It also lists what the mini is made from in the minis description

My experience is that if it doesn't say "high detail resin" (ha!) then you're safe with metals.

I bought Prince Imrahil, the Blackroot Command, and Foot Knight Command for Dol Amroth and all were metal.

Alas, the Men at Arms are all Finecast.

if it helps, another clue is in the price - most of the original / metal models on foot are priced at £8.20 ; the resin versions are always the more expensive ones.

So when they say "resin" they mean Finecast, right? Both descriptions are still on the site, which makes it frustrating. For example, the new Gundabad Orc Warband lists the material as resin, while the single blisters of each are "Citadel Finecast." I'm assuming it's the same material for both and GW are just slacking on their consistency. A tiny part of me is seriously hoping it's actual FW resin though...

Nope, no Forgeworld resin in anything on the GW webstore (sadly). Aside from Smaug, come to think of it. I think they decided to scrap the 'Finecast' brand after it became associated with somewhat less amazing models, but the material is no different (supposedly altered at some point, but I can't say I was too impressed with my various Mirkwood figures).

Yeah, pretty well what I figured. There was never much hope...

Still wish they changed all the older descriptions though. Some that definitely said "Citadel Finecast" at one point now say "resin" so the change has been partially implemented...

Just got my Fountain Court guys in finecast and I am about as disappointed in them as I was in the Dol Amroth pikemen. At least the spears are straighter than the pikes!

Now I know why people still buy the old metals on eBay!

This seems like as good a place as any for this:

I'm eagerly getting back into the game. I've only had a small number of Finecast miniatures up until now, but a lot of the old metals I never bought are now Fc. I do have 8 Uruk-hai crossbows that seem pretty good, but right now I'm painting Orcs I converted from the Great Beast kit. And they're awful. The casts were garbage to begin with (part of the reason I have a spare set; one sprue was completely mangled when I opened the GBoG, and GW sent me a full replacement set) but aside from lost or mangled details, the material itself is just junk. Despite washing and allowing to completely dry (I washed them like a year ago; they're bloody dry! :D) the paint still doesn't like sticking to them. They're extremely porous, and it just looks weird. I don't mind if they're ragged and jumbled since they're basic Mordor Orcs, but even the none-too-exciting plastic Mordor Orcs are a joy compared to these. Is all Finecast this bad, or were the GBoG kits just a major low point for the line?

Not holding paint is a new one to me. All my models hold paint well enough

There should be no issue with it holding the paint. I would wash it again (if you did it a year ago). Otherwise it may be the paint and not the model.

How do you wash it? Do you let it soak at all? What kind of soap are you using?

I filled a small sink about half-full with water, added a couple drops of dish liquid and swirled it around to get it soapy. Then I put the minis in still on their sprues and gently scrubbed them with a soft brush. Rinsed them off and let them air dry.

Again on the other hand, aside from excessive amounts of flash, the Uruk crossbows were just fine.
