I thought I would start a thread after seeing so many others to show what I am up to.

I don't have masses of time unfortunately but at present I am working through my excessive backlog.

The main thing though is I'm working slowtime on my Mumak and looking toward doing a painting guide for it, to go along with my Haradrim guide.

My initial thought is to have the guide in three seperate parts.

Part 1
This will be the assembly showing all the green stuff fills and perhaps some conversions of my own.

Part 2
Painting the base as there is so much to it, I think it needs a guide on it's own.

Part 3
The mighty beast itself and the howdah.

At present I'm working on the body of the Mumak. I;ve found the trunk fits poorly to the head, so that's gonna test my sculpting.

I'm open to any suggestions and I will stick some photo's on periodically.

I have a Mumak myself but I'm afraid it's being neglected and hidden in one of the darkest corners of my room.. It's lost a tusk or two and lost a few parts which really kind of killed my motivation for painting it.. it's a pity really.. Anyway I'll be looking forward to see any progress you have made on models. I might start my own WIP thread but I'm mostly spending my time on building my gaming board but my target at the moment for painting wise is to paint up my Isengard army ( including Uruks, scouts, siege set, balista, battering ram & a few crossbows ) which i will sell off for I'm not into Isengard.

My thoughts at present is to do something that encapsulates the horror of war. They will be plenty of blood and I have an idea of how to create a more congealed looking mess !!! Depending how that goes will depend on several things I have thoughts on.

There will be more weapons on show as I also want it to look completely realistic, without going too far.

I've even considered impalling one of the Rohirrim on a tusk. Would that be too much ?

Above all I want to take the model down a line I haven't seen done before and keep that genuine feeling it should have.

seems like a good idea but what if you play let's say against dwarfs and you have an impaled rohirrim.

I can see your point but the answer is simple...I don't play. My interest is purely the hobby side.

In that case the warrior would fit perfectly. Just make sure he looks like he is in motion, arms flailing about and the whole body bent towards the mumak. I'm really looking forwards to getting a glimpse at your work.

So here are some pics to show you my progress. As you will see I am at a very early stage.
These do show how much work is needed on the joins. Front and back of all four legs and all around the body are just for starters.

The below shows the problem I have with the trunk at present. Hopefully I will be updating with some nice sculpting for a seemless join.

It looks good.
That joint is a real pain but I'm sure you can fix it.

I will keep an eye out for updates as I have my own mumakil but when I bought it looked as if it was crushed under a piano.

let's take a look how it will take until you are completly crazy because of the size of the mumak. :twisted:

You've done a very good job of blending the skin folds across the transition from plastic to putty. Kudos!

Can't wait to see this beast with some paint on it!

Thanks for those replies and I think on these there is no need to tweek what I've done so far.

I'm on with the Howdah now. It's almost in place, though I am waiting for some rigging I ordered.

Once that is in place I will update then but in the meantime if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear from you.

I'm still thinking on the rider of Rohan and his demise on the tusk. That should be a challenge to pull off accurately !!!

I have a love hate relationship with mine, I love how he looks, I love the damage he can inflict, but I hate it when he panics.
Here's mine,the tusk weapons are jewelry chain with bamboo spikes glued to it. I glued to spikes at 90 degrees and then bound them with heavy thread. I kept the rigging to a minimum,mostly so you can move the minis around in the howdah. The tusks were done with blending and then lots of thin 'coffee' colored washes to try and keep them natural looking.

Here is a fairly flat looking base, this shot was taken about midway though the painting.A bit more blood and gore has been added as well as flocking.
It's a big model to paint including the crew, but there is so much scope to customize the beast with war paint and weapons it's also and inspirational model to paint. Plus it looks darned impressive when it's done.

You can see some WIP and finished piece images of my Mumak in my gallery.

One tip I'll offer is that I'd paint the Howdah and Mumak separately if at all possible. Painting these as sub-assemblies makes it much easier to get to the various levels of howdah in underneath some finicky areas. When I put mine together, I assembled each level of the howdah separately and painted them one at a time before glueing them together.
