what a great idea to get through a backlog and learning the rules meanwhile!
I should keep this in mind before I start my next project (although... the amount of my currently running projects must be 50+ I bet) !

Looking forward to follow your progress!! :)

Balin's tomb diorama:

Now I am in doubt whether I paint the bases of the fellowship minatures like this diorama or like I use to do with good miniatures (fe Warrior of Minas Tirithhttp://wernershobbyblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/battle-companies-reinforcements.html)

WIP 2 'Ringwraiths' and the 'The Witch-king of Angmar': Any tips for improving my highlighting techniques are welcome...

I really like these guys!
As for improving the highlights on the black, try adding a bit wider 'edge' to the grey on the ends of the cloak...with it being really thin it looked like the paint was chipped off on the Witch-king from one angle. Other than that...looks really good. :)

Black is really difficult to highlight, in my opinion. It looks as though you went straight from black to a medium grey, with no intermediate shades. Using the two colors you've got there it shouldn't be too hard to mix up some "in-between" shades that would help keep the highlights from looking so stark.

Hope that helps!

I agree with Jonathan, you need more intermediate stages in the highlights from black to grey. Black clothing and white clothing are always the hardest to highlight. Still, good job on the wraiths.

Thanks all for the tips...

I've to paint 6 more ringwraiths so I can practice. I think I'll try the intermediate stages...

I'm going to try for the wip models the use a wash (badab black) and then maybe highlight again

Badab black is a great tool, and will work a treat on these wraiths. Good luck with the remaining 6 8)

I second that! Using the Badab Black, then highlighting back up will give you a very nice effect. :)

Black is really hard to paint. I agree that some more blending would be good, but not too much, you don't want it to turn into grey robes!

I think they look great, definitely don't think they need an extra highlight as I think they look just right now. Good job, now you see how helpful a badab black wash can be :)
