The idea is that this troll is a "stone troll" like there are cave trolls, and hill trolls.
Hence the grey basic color of the skin, with ruddy brown near the bumps and the bumps being a very light gray.

Updates, troll and beginning khardush.
At this rate I may never get to glorfindel in the challenge

Finished highlighting the leather, may put a wash on it for some shadow.
Painted the armor black again.

Image

Painted the armor a mix of bronze and black, then drybrushed chainmail.

Still have the sword to go.

Im sorry, but I dont like the clothes. Its too colorful. You should make it darker a little bit with black wash.
I also see a lot of bubble on the skin. This is because you paint it to fast with to many paint. You should remove those bubbles with a sharp thin object, and then paint those areas again carefuly.
Otherwhise this will be a very nice modell, go for it.

If I may come with a little criticism, your models doesn't seem to have any depth at all. On the other hand, it looks like the perfect model to be dipped. Or, wash the entire model with devlan mud, I think that would make the troll really "pop".

I agree, but first remove those bubbles. :)

If you go back in the thread you will see that I explained those bubbles. They are actually a product of priming incorrectly with gesso. Yes, it is too thick and the bubbles formed, but I am not going to go back to fix it, it would involve stripping and taking the model apart. I have limited time for that. :) I assembled this troll more than two years ago and now just want it done and to practice in it.

I agree, the colors may be too bright and I may yet do a dark wash on the red, I already did one on the leather and I think it improved there. I am trying to avoid using washes to see what I can do without them. This red is the same red that I used on my morannon orcs and it may just seem bright because of the amount of light I have flooding the picture. As far as depth, yeah, I am a master of subtle shallow transitions, which is a criticism I tell myself all too often.

Okay, troll is done except paint on the base. Worked on getting more contrast onto the mini, darker shadows and lighter highlights. Still need to find a better way to take photo's, guess I have to read the "how to take photos of minis" again.

No Flash EDIT: replaced Picture of troll with a better Pic
Image

Also started Khardush, I removed that fireball, I really thought it took something away from the mini. The goal is to make his cloak look reddish orange....well, firey :) yeah new word!

I agree, Kardush look good with his randam fireball shooting out of his hand, it adds more character.

Okay, i did not finish the challenge in time this month, but it is always a motivating factor to not only paint mini's but also to improve. Which is great fun :).
Still working on khardush as well as a black guard captain.
Next I will start working on rohan or a bunch of orc trackers do not know which yet.

So here is the finished glorfy foot and mounted.

Too bad you didn't finish for the challenge deadline but you can take comfort in the fact you've finished up with a fantastic Glorfindel miniature for your collection. Well done he looks great! Nice base too. 8)

The finished result is brilliant. I really like the realistic skin tone. The only thing I would suggest is going over the rim of the base with either watered down Chaos Black or watered down Dark Flesh (or whichever colour you use for the rims of your bases) just to tidy up the rim. Other than that, a great couple of minis. The highlighting all round is spot on.

LOL, yes, I forgot about the base. I was so happy to get it done and varnished that I spaced on the base.

Very well done! A great miniature to add to the ranks.
On a side note, what kind of material is the large bush?

Paints used:
GW paints: regal blue, tallarn flesh, elf flesh, adaptus battlegrey, dark angels green, snakebite leather, taupset ochre, iyanden darkson, mithril silver, boltgun metal, scorched brown and mechrite red.
Vallejo Game Colors: ultramarine blue,  magic blue, sick green, scorpy green, sunblast yellow
Vallejo Model Color: sand yellow
reaper master series: shadowed stone, stone grey, weathered stone, bone shadow, aged bone, leather white and dragon red.

The horse skin was done with the reaper stone set with leather white added to the weathered stone for the last highlight.
I like the leather white as a "white" because it has a touch of grey in it.

The bush was made with army painter swamp tufts set side by side. I really like this stuff from them. I used to make my own but it is a time consuming project to make a single tuft.
