First, I have been out of the Hobby for a long time, and am officially kicking the dust off all my old stuff and working on some of these armies I have collected. I figured a good way to get myself motivated to paint again is to participate in TLA's Army Painting Challenge for the first half of 2013.

Now, I have piles of these miniatures everywhere, but have not been keeping up with my book-buying... :oops:
I have all three of the first "Movie Box Set" rulebooks, and LoME, WotR, all 3 'Journey' books, and a stack of the regional and event themed books that came after RotK. That being said, I am not quite up to date on some of these changes that I have been reading about in discussions on here. I do intend to catch up on the most mandatory books, but I have other expenses, and a holiday going on, so that may be a few weeks from now. It sounds like the stats and point values from LoME are a little outdated for Rohan now... :roll:

So, I was hoping I could enlist the help of the Rohan experts, and work out a good somewhat-formidable list using the miniatures that I currently have on hand and in-route. I am not asking anyone to violate Forum Policy by posting point details, but any tactical advice based on changes I may not be aware of would be awesome while I plan to tackle this challenge, and get a good looking - usable army at the end. This army should be considered for SBG for now.

So far, I have found: 66(ish) RoR; 24(ish) WoR;Theoden foot & mount; Eomer foot & mount; Gamling foot & mount; Armored Merry foot & mount; Armored Eowyn; 2 mounted Royal Guard. I have 3 of the 4 figures from the 'Commanders' set on their way to me (the No Mercy Captain, Banner, and Horn). I am hoping to get at least one more banner on those horses, and may be doing some sculpting if I can't find a good deal on any mounted Gamlings to butcher (I also NEED a mounted Eowyn - working on that).

Anyways, thanks in advance for any help making this pile of metal and plastic into a badass Rohan force! The challenge's rules say it must be at least 700 points, so I'd like to start there. But larger lists are also very encouraged!

T

Here they are in their pre-challenge state:

Yay more Rohan!

I'm no Rohan expert and won't attempt any army advice, but I'm glad you asked since I'm planning a Rohan army myself.
Seems I have to keep an eye on your posts ;)

First things first buy the Kingdoms of men sourcebook and work from there. :)

I'm with Bartelomeus, I'll be following your progress as I have a soft spot for Rohan too and would like to start a small force some day!

In fact, if you ever feel that 66 Riders of Rohan are too many, fire me a PM!

I'm a newbie here and to the hobby, so you probably know more than I... But from what I gather about Rohan, this is what some of your likely answers are going to be like.

1) Fun faction to play but not very competative
2) Cavalry is tricky to play with and pretty soft
3) All Riders of Rohan can now ignore the bow limit, however, the -1 penalty for moving and shooting makes them very inneffective.
4) Erkenbrand is a great, cheap hero and upgrades his RoR warband.
5) Grimbold does an upgrade for Warriors of Rohan, again that makes them slightly better.
6) The Kingdoms of Men is probably the book you need if you're a Rohan man, many of the updates will be in these.
7) Troops are lead in groups of 12 by leaders in a "warband"

I think with all those Rohirrim, 700pts is going to be easy for you!

Anyhow, I'm sure the above isn't particularly helpful, but look me up if you wish to part with some of those Rohirrim!

Hi and welcome to the forum and back to the hobby. It seems that everyone wants to start a Rohan army these days :)
As already mentioned you will have to buy the Kingdoms of Men sourcebook. In it you will find all the up-to-date profiles for Rohan and the new deployment rules. Furthermore you may want to consider buying the Hobbit Rulebook, since it is the latest edition of the rules, but its on the expensive side.

Finally, upon buying the book check GW's FAQs regarding the rules and the sourcebook in specific.

As others have already said, you’ll need the Kingdoms Of Men book for the latest Rohan rules. In the meantime the main thing you need to know is that your army needs to be made of warbands, each with a hero and up to 12 Warriors.

With your existing models, I’d suggest something like:

Éomer mounted with 12 Riders of Rohan
Éowyn mounted with 12 Riders of Rohan
Gamling mounted with 2 mounted Royal Guard and 10 Riders of Rohan
Captain with 12 Warriors of Rohan

I’m not quite sure how many points that is, but should be a good starting point (although not the most competitive).

Once you have the Kingdoms Of Men book then I’d get Erkenbrand and Grimbold. Erkenbrand’s rules have changed from the ones in the journey book.

You will probably also want the new Hobbit rule book, the mini version seems to be going for just over £10 on eBay.

That would be 842 points all together:

Warband 1 12/12
Éomer, Marshal of the Riddermark with Horse; Shield;
12 Rider of Rohan
----
Warband 2 12/12
Éowyn, Shield Maiden of Rohan with Horse;
12 Rider of Rohan
----
Warband 3 12/12
Gamling, Captain of Rohan with Royal Standard of Rohan;
10 Rider of Rohan
2 Rohan Royal Guard with Horse;
----
Warband 4 12/12
Captain of Rohan with Shield;
4 Warrior of Rohan with Shield;
4 Warrior of Rohan with Bow;
4 Warrior of Rohan with Throwing spears; Shield;
----

:)

Awesome! Thanks so much, all. :D

I had a feeling I wanted Erkenbrand from posts I've seen. So these Redshields that he upgrades his riders to, are they tougher assaulty cavalry? Should they be armed in a specific way (sword and shield for all 12)?

After counting again, I realized my stupid mistake. I don't have 24ish warriors, I have 48 exactly (I had an unopened box of 24 right in front of me that I was forgetting.)

On to the list. Since I don't have a mounted Eowyn yet, would she be useful leading the infantry on foot, and have a mounted captain lead her cavalry unit? Since I am not positive that I will be finding a mounted Eowyn very soon, I want to make the working list based on what I have and can covert now. Switching it around later shouldn't be a problem as I fill my want list, I think. Also, is the horn and banner useful additions to the infantry group?

Thanks so much for your feedback (and the list!), I am organizing paints and materials right now to get started on this challenge after the start of the year.

I forgot that you mentioned you didn't have Eowyn mounted yet.

The problem with Eowyn on foot is her attacks are defence are both quite low.

You could use Théoden instead to start with, although he isn't great for his points.

Adding a banner and horn to the Warriors on foot could be useful too.

It was very easy to miss, with the way I listed it all in the body there.

The way I see it, now that I get to use all the bows that I was being forced to pay for when using RoR, it's almost like having free points to waste! Since this ultimately is for a painting challenge, I am trying to fit in a lot of these special characters, but in the end I want a decently viable list. If Theoden is better than Eowyn, but costs more, I can live with that. I will probably paint both anyways! :-D

I wish GW would do a second version of Theoden. We have three Eomer profiles for Rohan-sake! But we're stuck with a Theoden doomed. That being said, he is playable but your opponent will look at him like an easy target to mark so be careful and keep him protected.

This should be 1000 points. Is this viable?

Warband 1 - 12/12
Théoden, King of Rohan with Heavy Armour
1 Warrior of Rohan with Banner
1 Warrior of Rohan with War horn; Throwing Spears; Shield
10 Warrior of Rohan with Throwing Spears; Shield

Warband 2 - 12/12
Éomer, Marshal of the Riddermark with Horse
12 Rider of Rohan with Throwing Spears

Warband 3 - 12/12
Gamling, Captain of Rohan with Horse; Royal Standard
10 Rider of Rohan
2 Rohan Royal Guard with Horse

Warband 4 - 12/12
Erkenbrand, Captain of Rohan with Horse
12 Westfold Redshields

Is there anything blatantly wrong with this list, like mis-use of throwing spears, something else stupid, etc?

Thanks!

I'd skip the throwing spears on the RoR, they already have bows and they don't count towards the bow limit, so the amount of times they'll charge in throwing is limited. Instead, take those points and upgrade all your RoR to Westfold riders...Erkenbrand isn't limited to only those in his warband.

Personally I'd skip Theoden unless it's for theme, and if it's for theme then he needs a horse. If it's not for theme, a better infantry hero would be Grimbold, since he can boost your WoR's strength...gives them a bit of punch against a front line of uruk-hai, morannons, or black-shield goblins.

Do you want the two war horns for a particular reason? Erkenbrand has a really really good warhorn so usually I just stick with him. Although when he dies it does kinda stink but those extra points could be enough to upgrade the army to redsheilds.

And if you are looking for a reason to take Eowyn I use her with my outrider archers. Since she is super cheap and has decent F/W/M compared to a regular captain she does see a bit of use for me.

Nice! Done. Now I'm at 998 without those spears, and now all RoR (34) are Redshields!

It's for a painting challenge, but I am trying to get a somewhat-competetive list out of it. I will try to see if I can grab a Grimbold someplace (there is one currently on Ebay...). I already had to work out a trade for an Erkenbrand since deciding to tackle this project. :rofl:

The rule is 'Over 700 Points', which I am already well over, but I want this to be a personal challenge, and may be growing this list as I make progress painting (and collecting! :o )

Thanks for the quick reply, and great advice!

Really, it's just because I just got the Finecast command set, and want to use him! :lol:

I am looking for a reason to take her, but I need a mounted version! She is on my Trade Forum - Needs list. I'm going to add Grimbold, and see how I do at getting either of them as this project progresses. Hopefully they will both make appearances!

I wouldn't take any infantry, keep them to represent dismounted men, but they suck unless Grimbold is leading them. I would up your numbers of royal guard as well, the higher fight, bodyguard abilities, and higher defense are great for a heavy hitting center that can charge terror causing units. I used to love allying with Gondor, to take heavily armoured knights just for the lances, but I'm not sure if that's still do-able under warbands

Edit: yes, I can still ally with Gondor or a fiefdom, you just have to take a captain and up to twelve followers.
I really need to get the army books, planning Warbands is getting easier, but not knowing who the independent heroes (those who can't lead warbands) are is making it tricky

The only ones I can think of are rangers of the north, dunedain, and the kings huntsman. ...and a few hobbits, but I doubt that matters...

Yea, your and Whafrog's advice is sinking in more and more on going all cavalry. I might just have to reconfigure the list with a mounted Theoden and Warband. Mounted RRG have been on my wants list since I wrote it.

The RRG are one model I'll be glad to get in finecast, they are so heavy all of their horses have broken at one point or another. I'll check out your trades thread. As far as smaller armies my favorite is Eomer, I have to take him. Haven't tried out his newer kingly stat line yet.

Whafrog arent some of the cheap Gondor characters independent like Beregond?
