Hello everyone, I'm reasonably new to SBG and haven't had the one ring rules that long, my question is to those who have now played the new Hobbit version of the game, is it worth me going and buying the new rules ect.. Or shall I stick with the one ring rulebook for now to get more experience before buying the new version?

You should be fine with the old book unless you really want the new profiles and can't wait for GW to release a sourcebook. Not that much has changed, here is a good thread with a lot in one place:

The basics mechanics of the game are the same, just a few details like spells, some extra heroic actions, and the new bow movement penalty. If you're new to the game, might as well get comfortable with it with the old book. IMHO until you know the game really well it won't make much difference.

Just wondering if the new rules regarding monsters and heroic actions make te game better?

I was under the impression that the SBG and Hobbit were 2 different game systems.

Is this true or not? I know you can mix/match armies, but is the SBG ruleset obsolete?

LOTR SBG rules are not obsolete, but they do add some new rules to the game in the hobbit. We are going to try them out on New Years day and see how they change things up using some LOTR SBG army lists. They add a few new heroic options fro heroes, monters gain new abilities, and casting has normal and focused effects. There are new spells and the new unit profiles rom hobbit, but I have the hard cover book and all of the old LOTR units are listed in the back of the book so they are compatible with the old stuff. They are more of rule tweaks, but the only I see missing is rules for Volley. That may be just an oversite, or with the new deploy rules, its almost impossible to get volleys off anyways. you start so darn close now in the scenarios.

The hobbit rules obsoleted the ORB rules. The new rules for sbg - which you can use both lotr and hobbit figures for - is the new hobbit rules book.

@legolas Yes, and there are now two levels of spells, channelled and un-channelled.

Yeah I had heard that there was a channeled and Un channeled spells, but is there new spells as well? Different ones?

What's difference between channelled and in channelled???

Sorry, we can't give out specific rules, it could potentially get the site into quite a bit of trouble. I will say though that one is more effective than the other, at a cost.

And @Legolas I believe there are some new spells. Some quite nasty ones actually, in the realms of dark magic and the likes. Best to get the rulebook though.

some spells also changed for better or for worse. Lets just say immobolise isnt as good as it once was. The new weapon rules tend to favour cheap, weak troops (huzzah for goblins ) but if you are average you may as well ignore them.



Listen to the knight If not the hardback, the mini ones are all over ebay for as little as £10 if you are lucky.

Mid Sussex Wargamers

They are not two different game systems, the Hobbit is the same SBG game with a few tweaks. Most people seem to like the monster tweaks, the spell tweaks, the new heroic actions, the in-the-way tweaks, the spear support tweak; and are a bit iffy about the movement penalty for shooting, and the specialized weapon strikes. You could ignore some or all of them and it would be the old SBG.

How is the movement penalty to shooting affecting games? Many I know are just house ruling that out of the game, but just wondered how others feel about this change? Makes a big differnce I bet to Elves and Gondor armies!

With my Osgiliath army I found that I lost out on a turn of shooting at most if I had to reposition my rangers. Its annoying for sure, but not game-destroying. As long as you're stationary you''ll be fine. I can imagine it hurting Rohan though.
