Hey there welcome to my project log! I received The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as a Christmas gift. This is really going to be a big undertaking for me since this is my first miniature game in 5 years. I don't have much experience with painting armies, I'm more of a showcase painter. But I am sure my skillset can really help me to get the most out of these miniatures. I'm going to try to avoid techniques like washing and drybrushing, because I want to have more control over the shading and highlighting, and I want maximum contrast.

My first goal is to paint up enough miniatures for the first scenario: 12 goblins (I'm going to paint a sprue of 18 in one go), a goblin character, 4 dwarfs and then the scenery.

At this point I have spent about 5-6 hours of painting on the figures. Which means 15-20 minutes per model. The skin is finished.

Very nice so far, the skin colour looks great and the contrast is spot on. Done in good time too and not at the expense of the individual miniatures, I really enjoy the energy of your painting. savage.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. Of course apart from the flesh there isn't much to see yet but I think the big picture is already there

A question for you: for the pieces of cloth on the figures I want to break away from the movie and use red for this. The Goblin King's Throne also has some cloth on it, and on the box you can see that it has been painted in red, which looks very good I think. So I want to use this same color on the goblins as well to tie them together. And also to have a distinctive color on the miniature. Because when I will paint on some bone-color it will probably end up looking too much like the goblin's skin. Especially when I paint it because I use a lot of identical colors when shading and highlighting

The pouches they are wearing will be painted dark brown.

They really do look great. I agree that the standard cloth color will wash away on the model, but a test showing the red you are considering would be needed before I think any of us could say how it works. You do an amazing job with the skin and what you're doing so far with the weapons. The right looking red (old, tattered and soiled) could look great. The wrong red could ruin the whole effect you've achieved so far. But tbh with the way you made these look I'm sure you're going to make a great color on the cloth.

On a side note did you use a suggested guide for the skin tones or was that your own creation? I really like it!

You are correct, a flashy bright red would not suit these models. I was thinking more of a subtle, browner red, like the red cloth on the throne on the box cover.

I did not follow any painting guides. I don't have the exact recipes here at hand but the basecoat is done with Vallejo Model Color Deck Tan.

The plan is to make a Tutorial on this subject soon (probably a video).

A purplish red could work really well I think.
Very nice painting in such a small amount of time!
Also, some amazing works on your fb and blog aswell, I think the release of the Hobbit got many great painters on the site :-D

Yesterday I painted on dark red (Vallejo Model Color Burnt Cadmium Red to be precise) and I'm very happy with the result. With hindsight I could have used red instead of the purple for the glazing on the skin as well to get a better match, but the overall result looks very good. Pictures soon!

I also started to assemble the walkways: top quality. I think this boxed set is really worth its money.

I thought it was fine, I'm used to hearing that accent as my cousins live in flemmish speaking Belgium

The project is on hold I'm afraid... preparing some other miniatures for the upcoming The Fang painting competition by GW (a Golden Demon like competition for countries like Belgium which don't host a GD).

But a while ago I decided to paint the skin of Gloin and make a video about this.

I wasn't sure where I should put this on the forum, since I don't see any Tutorial section here, so I'm just putting it here. Feel free to copy the link to another thread
