Great work as always BW. I love those Ranger conversions, and your Gandalf is superb! (How did I miss seeing him until now?). Your painting skill sets a high standard for the rest of us to work towards. Keep up the good work!

You describe using a corched brown glaze for hair and a boltgun metal glaze for the mail what exactly do you mean by "glaze"?
Sorry if its a noob question, lol

I'm not sure if I'm right or not, but I'm pretty sure a glaze is basically a watered down wash that is applied in very thin layers. Not sure if that's what you were doing BizzareWarstar, that's just my knowledge of glazes. Hope that helps!

Thanks philoking :)

gamrmenhord, would like to see different takes on a Dweller, I'm sure you'd be well able. their fun to make, a bit like making Ent's.

ste271276, exactly what PowerofWill said. If a wash mix is 1 part paint to 3 parts water then a glaze would be 1 part paint to 5 or 6 parts water, sometimes more. Although, it doesn't always work out using a glaze to paint this way, the colour is muted and some paints/colours work better than others.

Not much painting of late beside undercoating the remaining Rohan command and the ranger conversion, I'm kind of letting it slip at this stage. Made some terrain though, dug out an old unfinished project and got stuck in...

Image
Cut some oval shapes out of cardboard and glued them on top of one another. Got some dried twigs and stuck them on with blu-tac and painted with PVA.

Image
Added some strips of newspaper with lashings of PVA to get rid of the steps on the cardboard and add a little support for the twigs which got another dose of PVA.

Image
Some broken cork and small pebbles

Image
Glued some tree bark to various areas and painted the whole lot with pva before smothering it all in sand.

Before adding the PVA and sand I placed the cardboard piece on some cling-film which was on a solid flat surface. I poured PVA near the edge of the cardboard and let it flow over the edge and onto the cling-film. I then placed a barrier of sand around the PVA to stop it from running wide and becoming thin. The PVA leaked through anyway so I lifted the edges of the cling-film towards the center of the terrain and fixed them there to contain the pva flow. I thought it might set with a slight upwards curve but it turned out grand...and thats where I left off.

Image
Underside of the terrain.

Image

Image
To finish then was just a matter of painting and adding some static grass and flock.

Image
Image
Still needs a right thumb and another nail for his left hand. The feet look a little naked as is but I'm hoping that the base detail I have in mind will support and compliment whats going on with the sculpt. Other than that he's almost done.

Amazing trees and very simple to make. The ones I have been making don't look very realistic plus if you use real twigs you save paint! I will follow your guide and try to improve my own, thanks.

Constantine, Sticky Fingersss, thank you.

garmenhord: Those hairy feet are suppose to be flames, but now that you mentioned it they do look like fur when out of context. I'm going to try blend them in with flames on the base and perhaps some cracked ground with lava underneath. Once he's painted though there should be no doubt's about whats going on :)

Got the ranger conversion painted but before that I made two Rohan conversions and painted them. I also got started on some Rivendell Knights.

Wonderful freehand on the tree, it looks perfect. In fact everything about your rangers are perfect, palette used, technique, base, everything.

I have to agree with the above 2 posts... just stunning!
You've really pulled off that Halbarad conversion perfectly and the painting on him is just glorious :yay:
I also really like the 2 rohan chappies... brilliant colour scheme and the painting is once more, amazing!
