A couple images to share, we painted up a Legolas as a prize for a local event...

And an update on the work in progress on all those tiny 15mm zombies based on 1 pence pieces. Here is a completed horde...

Wow, this one hasn't been updated in a while, but now is the time to get it back on track! As this is a LOTR/Hobbit forum I'm going to keep my other 3 projects out of this and carry on posting about by Hobbit exploits :).

This decision was made to finally take part in the onering forum's painting challenge. Results of the voting are pending so I'll come back to this thread and HOPEFULLY have entered the challenge, two of the options are a warband or goblins, it may swing the other way toward Fellowship but either way - I'll be working on this Goblin Warband throughout March. I have here then, the Goblin King and 7 Goblins, a total of 8 figures making up a Goblin Town warband. This is a good enough boot up the you-know-what to get us moving with this Goblin Town boxed set, you never know - might even have it finished before the next one comes out!

Now that I can confirm the challenge is indeed to paint a warband, I can get these guys painted up and submitted by March 31st! Looking forward to it, there are rumblings of another member of the painting studio working on an Uruk-Hai warband but we'll get some snaps of that later. The first step is easy, thats a simple basecoat. I opted for black for these goblins because I personally feel that living in grimy, muddy, festering conditions underground... Well, they aren't exactly going to be sparkling. Whilst I am copying the style and staying true to the films I'm taking them just a very slight amount darker to reflect what I believe is their true nature.

Image

I went off to go work on another project whilst that dried, before coming back to these. I thought that a safe bet at this stage would be a nice coat of Rakarth Flesh for all models concerned. After this I would take 1 Goblin and do what I like to call a "prototype". More on that in a moment...

Image

I'll be back in my next update with how I turned Mr. Prototype Goblin into a simple Rakarth Flesh piece of plastic to the first complete Goblin, oh yes am I taking this painting challenge seriously! I am very much enjoying it too :).

So, as I said last post I've taken one goblin aside to work on him and here's what I did. Basic layers all round first of all, yep - I even did the sword and the eyes. I spent a lot of time following the logical colors, hope to get my first complete goblin in place.

Image

Image

I really wasn't very happy with him. Some serious highlighting and shading was in order. I think the Goblins should still remain pink/light at core but have a somewhat dirty/muddy look as they scurry through the dingy tunnels in their domain. With that in mind I produced the following, complete with a few boils as well. (I later went back to these boils and added a touch of Bestial Brown to give them a bit more depth).

Image

A little work on the back of my Goblin, again remaining true to the mixture of the film's depiction and how I envisioned them reading the book. They truly are disgusting creatures.

Image

His sword has been put to good use recently...

Image

Image

I did a little batch work on the rest of the warband to finish off this little painting session, finally deciding that the prototype goblin will have to do for now - so little hobby time!

Todays post is all about basing. I thought about the rules for the onering painting challenge and how they awarded points (not actual points) and it made your models look a little bit better if you were more creative. Bearing that in mind I thought that the bland bases needed spicing up. For the incomplete ones I've added a few features...

The Goblin King now has a little furry friend scurrying around at his feet.
Image

This Goblin has a spear, a dismembered head and some greenstuff which will essentially serve as a pile of gore.
Image

This Gobbo has recently ripped apart a weary traveller, all that remains to be eaten are his legs until Thorin and Co. disturb his latest meal.
Image

Staying true to the nature of these Goblins, this one has clearly stolen somebodys luggage, the sneaky ****.
Image

Here are the other two unpainted boys with some generic bits stuck on the base.
Image

There is one more left to be counted besides our current finished guy, with him I am going to do source-lighting, just as I have done with the finished guy from the last post! I came back to him to improve the boils on his skin and to give him a hand-painted shadow, I'm quite pleased with the results. Next post: more painted Goblins :)

Thanks Raph, I'm looking forward to seeing how your mega Gothmog warband grows too my friend :). I finished my second Goblin from this warband today, this guy is crazy - looking like he has a thirst for blood he clearly just ripped apart another Goblin with what little remains hanging around at his feet. I did a little more source-lighting here what with the shadow on the base and there are a few extra details that make this stand out a little more from an ordinary Goblin; i.e the blood splatters on his weapon and the mud dredged all over his feet. On with the photos, I enjoyed painting this one.

Image

Image

For the final photographs of the whole warband I intend to wait for a sunny day to get some decent pictures and help the camera pick up all the details. These photos under a daylight lamp at 7pm in an evening don't really do it justice but help to illustrate my overall progress on the project. In short, watch this space :).

a little tip for blood splatters

get the biggest brush you own make a wash with a mix of scab red, blood red and some flesh wash, dilute it, soak the brush in it, then use yur finger to flick said wash on the intended area

Another goblin today, this is the one with the two dwarf legs ripped apart on his base, its a bloody mess - pun intended. I'm really enjoying this project, its difficult to fit it in the schedule but its great fun when its there :).

Today's update sees two more completed Goblins, plus the lighting was good today so I took a few fresh photos to properly do them a little justice. I'm going to a real mutated look here, these ugly creatures spend their life underground eating raw flesh and fighting each other and these figures are exactly what I would imagine them to be when reading the book. The second chap down has an eye missing and I tried something new in making his eyes a little larger ala a vampire bat or some similar underground creature. He's my favourite one so far.

I'm not happy with the first one in that most recent post so I'm going back to him to sort him out, he isn't as bad but when you take a photo and blow it up you sort of think "oh god..." the rest of them are sticking around though :) Hopefully I can get these guys done and move onto good old Goblin King before the month is up!

Thanks Chris and Thanks Raph :). I too am looking forward to seeing how the big chap turns out. Two more Goblins completed today, here are a few snaps. Up next is the big guy... *gulp*. I'm pretty chuffed with the final Goblin pictured below, there is also an update on the warband as a whole.

Thank you mate :) your warband is looking epic too, I fear I've lost this one but still good to get something painted while I had a couple days off, all hell breaks loose now! I hope I can fit Goblin King in before times up. Any tips on how to tackle this guy/make him look good?
