Paint test The first coat. Some of the glue has sealed the surface so the first coat did not stick. I will work on it some more.

The update should read, giving life to a rock face.
Charlie it looks great and may I add an excellent choice of colour. I know this is only the base layer but instantly it looks transformed .

Thanks. I placed it on it's back and did a second coat. It is much better. I will make a plaster wash and even out the stair to cover the glue seal and start it soon. It is a wet mess now so I need to leave it alone for a while.

Thanks for you nice comments.
I have decided to use a variation of the explosion effect for the lava.

I think my baser coat may be to light. I will pick up more Woodland scenic Pigment at the rail road show tomorrow. I do not have enough to finish.

Image

If I go with the Ocher and Raw Umber color the model will not match the cold gray lighting of the movie or my terrain set. I will try the darker brown washes first. If it will not work I can always get the airbrush out.
The slate like aquarium decoration was painted dark to light. I am trying Light to dark with the stair.
Dry plaster soaks up paint. If you thin the paint to much you can break down the binder. You can see some of that on the base coat. The white spots are caused by the wash drying before it can flow into the area or glue sealing the plaster. There seems to be some of both.
Mike and I moved the Inn model to Tree Fort to finish. So I will move the Stair Model to the Garage so I can use the air brush.
I am not using GW products. I have a color chart if any one wants to suggest colors

I think the rock needs a red oxide wash before I start dry brushing. It looks very muddy now. I don't think the shadows are deep enough.

Image

I am happy with this. I am going to seal it with a matt medium before I start blending the floor with the warm grays. I am going to match the floors in the rest of my Dungeon sets.

Image

The floor will need a bit more ruble. I will crush some cast plaster and make a chipped stone and apply it like railroad ballast.

Railroad show tomorrow :D :D
let me know what you think about the link above for the lava idea.
Don't be shy with the comments :!:

Great work, looks fantastic!

If you are doing the explosion like the hoth battle, I like it, but the one at the start of the video was a bit too spherical for me, but I like the appearance and idea.

I am going to use the same materials to make a lava flow for Moria.

This is going to be a much better base for the red oxide and umber washes. I need to mix more yellow ocher with the gray for the next coat on the stairs.
I like the paint effect for the desert but it is way to bright for Moria.

After Yellow ocher was added to gray.

Off to the show :D

That looks fantastic. The life is coming into this with each brushstroke and colour. I love what you've done here, it's taken some time to get here but hell has it been worth it.

This wash is burnt umber. Tomorrow I will add raw umber.

I think the only question now is getting the contrast right. Getting the light and dark areas looking good.
The colour scheme works for me, I like the use of umber but even though its dark I think you can take the highlights quiet light.

It is amazing! So much detail to look at - this could be a cunning way of winning a game as your opponents would be so distracted admiring the scenery you should be able to trounce them in the battle.

I am to the point I have to base coat the rest of the stair. I put two more washes on the rock faces. I will make a photo when the wash drys out a bit.
I have decided I should have started with a black under coat. The rock looks like limestone. If I want lava in the base the rock should look like basalt.
I picked up some LED light kits at the RR show. I am going to try out some new things.

Thanks for the nice comments. It should be fun to play on.

Here is the photo.

I need to paint the rest of the stair to this point so I can high light all of the parts at once.
