The detail decorative blocks are for Moria. I would like to find some nice looking Dwarf statues to use instead of the Knights.

I am planing something for Dor Guldur with the larger statues I knocked the wall over trying to figure out an overgrown look. I will need to study the drawings in Chronicles III to work out the odd doors and windows. I have an idea for the iron work. If I get time I will try it.

Brilliant work Charlie. I can't help but liking the statues that fell over, are you planning on incorporating something like this into the finished piece ? After all, for Moria, it would be very fitting.

Haha, that was an accident? I thought you'd carefully arranged it in to a "fallen" pose!

Okay, that sounds great!
Thomarillion used to sell some fantastic Dwarf statues, but they've been out of production for a years, unfortunately. I was happy to find some on ebay, but I don't they can be found nowadays. Anyway, you could try to use some larger scale plastic Dwarf minis/toys. Or, you could maybe find some 54mm minis, like this one from Gimli: http://www.mithril.ie/PBSCProduct.asp?ItmID=11596717

Finally, I also know about these Dwarven statues. I quite like these, and plan to buy them at some point:
http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=1379
http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=1312
Their design is slightly different from the LotR Dwarves, but they fit well enough, I think.

Hope that'll be of some use. ;)

Fëanor, the mighty elf, The links are very useful.

The blocks are like Legos. They are very useful for planing. I am going to need a custom mold to make enough of the angle parts for the Hill of Sorcery.

I had this in mind http://www.lotrscenerybuilder.org/parth_galen.php
when I purchased the statues. I have enough stairs cast now.

I intend to make a table for this model I finished up a while back.

I think this table was a GW display in Germany. I have wanted to do one for several years.

Thanks, but that table was done by some one else. I am in the planing process for making one like it.

Strangely enough, I have been thinking about that table layout for years but this is the first one I have actually seen in a completed state - I would modularise it for storage and the actual layout is a bit different to what they have shown - I would want the archways where Legolas and Gimli assisted Aragorn when he was delayed by the Uruk-hai. The best way to understand the layout is watch the scenes at the end of FotR - the overhead shot of the uruks running down the steps toward the sound of the Horn of Gondor is an excellent reference.

The old Two Tower video game, from about ten years ago now, gives a pretty decent layout of Amon Hen, if you need a decent reference.

good point I will look for it  I have most of the detail parts cast.

Image

I have begun to plan out what I need for the Mirkwood terrain I am going to build.

Image

The thorn vines will obscure some of the details. I should be able to make a convincing Necromancers hall way.

Image

When I figure out some of the details I will make a new mold. Casting often takes the most time.

Those sinister vines with the big thorns - I have been wondering about how to approach those. A few ideas - green stuff or similar rolled out very thin, with the tips of cocktail sticks stuck in before the resin sets; probably expensive and slow/fiddley.
Electrical cable - maybe 2.0-2.5mm overall thickness, with the tips of cocktail sticks glued on to represent the thorns: the cable can be quite malleable and the thorns are added only after the 'vine' itself in in the final position.

From The Hobbit The Desolation Of Smaug Offical Movie Guide by Brian Sibley Drawing by Alan Lee

Image

I am most likely have to file down some bricks to get this right. The angled elements are repeated so often It will call for custom molds. I am using blocks from Hirst Arts Prison tower and Octagon tower.

Image

I found the plastic pick at the Dollar Store. I think the round wood picks will work best for thorns.

I have an Idea for the thorns. If it works or not I will post it. I will have to get some wood picks before I try it.

I am casting one big one. I am trying to make a new mold so that I will be able to cast parts for Mirkwood. I am going to include elements so that I can make some of the odd shapes and some of the very common parts that I need hundreds of.
Mike is casting common blocks so that we can make a dungeon and a Inn for the store. We are going to use the Moria columns and stair parts for that too.
I need to make about 20 more cast of the column/stair mold to finish the Moria Halls. I will have enough parts to glue up several different projects.
Doing some of the casting at the store has generated a lot of interest. I have more help than I am used to. The blocks are like legos except I can make more.

The elements are not all glued together. I still need to attach the spiky iron work and thorn vines. It will be best to do that wile the elements are separate parts. I thought a curved stair would look good but I don't have parts for a left and right.

Image

I am going to make thorn vines. Army Painter makes a product called Poison Ivy. I thought some of you might like to see it. It comes in a small package but looks like it will go a very long way.

This is going to be a free standing ruin with a few twisted trees. I based it on Radagast's encounter in Mirkwood with the Witch King. I added details from Alan Lees drawings.
I used 20 of the 1/2 triangle blocks for this model so I will add them to the custom mold

Excellent once again Charlie. Hirst moles are something I may loom at in the future and I certainly know where to go for advice.
