Hello people

I thought stepping out of the lurking shadows and actually posting might help me to deal with the insane painting backlog that my husband and I seem to have built up :-D

We've been playing SBG for the past two and a half years, and I never really had the courage to paint our figures. I decided that this is the year that changes!

Currently unpainted..... 488 figures
Currently painted........ 188 figures
Half-painted............... 9 figures
Needs major repair....... 2 figures
Used, may be able to salvage.... 22 figures (with many layers of paint and sealant - some acrylic, some enamel)

Nothing based or sealed yet, it's far too cold out to spray them, and will remain that way for another 3 or 4 months here still, so nothing 'completely' done I guess

Painted since January began: 74 Dwarves and 7 Wargs
(see, there is an upside to getting quite literally snowed into your home for a week straight, even with sketchy power)

First things I ever painted:

Sorry for the poor pictures, we don't have the best of lighting to take them, and our lightbox won't be here for another month. The front two wargs are the same in both Pics

looking at the photos - the one Warg's knee is not scraped up, just a bad glare from the camera.

C&C welcome!
Thanks!

They look good, although it is kind of hard to tell with the glare but that's fine.
They look better than my Wargs when I started so well done. Keep up the good work and your backlog should be gone in no time.

I like what I see, it will be nice to see more of your work as you do it. You seem to have a few to get through.

Well done on getting started with the paint. You seem to being well if you have painted nearly 100 figures in a matter of weeks. I haven't painted that many figures in the last 2 years. Any chance you can show us some of your dwarves?

Thanks guys!

Here's some of the White Wargs I painted yesterday. I finished seven of them in cream & white, and base-coated another dozen or so in various shades of brown. The only two that I managed to get decent shots of were GW's 40K Fenrisian Space Wolves, which we bought to add variety to our Warg pack.

The one standing on his front foot will eventually be used as a ride for goblin marauders. Looking forward to playing around with that come springtime!

@John - here's a couple of really bad pictures of some of my husband's Dwarf army. We've really horrible lighting in our game room... I'll try to snag some better pictures come the morning.

Grim Hammers - I SWEAR their beards are not really that red! They're a far more natural reddish-brown... I really hate the lighting in that room.

Image

Floi Stonehand & some metal Khazad Guard - no idea why this was taken on a chessboard?

Image

More Khazad Guard, and some crossbow guys from SGMM in the background.

I know they're not the 'traditional' colors for Dwarves, but I'm far more likely to paint if I just go with the feel of the figure over a paint chart. The copper armor was his request to tie them all together, and we liked the way the purple cloth looked with it.

Thoughts anyone?

Purple colour is not uncommon on dwarves, some Iron hill´s heraldry includes purple and pretty reasonable and viable you wanna build up an army based on that heraldry.
Of course they dont have floi and named characters, but we can close eyes to that and imagine a character similar to that which turns out to be better for your army overall :)

Keep up the good work really...

Super work! Looks like getting snowed in isn't such a bad thing after all. I like the purple on the Khazad Guard and Dwarf Warriors, because it works nicely with the copper and brown shades you've chosen.
However, on the Grimhammers I'm not so sure about the red cloth just above the purple. If it were me I'd reconsider re-painting it a different shade of purple, or the darker colder brown you've used on the other models.
Just to tie them in to the rest of the army better, why not paint a little bit of their armour (the trim and details) in the copper colour as well?

Great painting though- keep up the good work!

grimhammers is a bit more tricky, since they already have highlight, tell your husband to try to give a GW wash(black) and get like 1/2 water 1/2 ink, wash over the mini´s armour and that should be enough to make them look like iron clad armour(obviously make it darker armour) but gives a much more definition of the entire model...
Also give the same black wash over the purple areas, then apply a very tin highlight with the mix of that purple (2/3 of that purple, 1/3 of white) and if you can apply thun lines the better, if not, apply on drybrush, let it dry most of the on your brush and then apply a dry and quickydrybrush over those purple areas, the new lighter colour should make that highlight just as nice and very natural...(good tecnique to apply on cloaks I can assure you, giving you natural gradient over very define lines)
Thats the method most people do to apply brown colours on the cloak to make them dirty anyway..

Nice painting, the colour scheme on the dwarves gives them a rather "Easterling" feel.

@Galanur - Thanks for the pointers, and I'm glad to know purple is actually a viable color choice! I was struggling with the Grim Hammers, as there isn't much variation to them color wise and they look... sort of boring. Is there a type of ink you'd recommend to wash with? I've been mostly making my own washes to date, although I did pick up the GW purple wash for the dwarves' clothing.
But I do all the assembly & painting for our figures and scenery, my husband's not a painter. :-D

@ mertaal - don't worry, it's not red, it's the same 'leathery brown' shade as the other ones. The photos were odd - sorry about that! I'll have to look at the grim hammers to see if I can add some copper to them... maybe their belts?

(Slightly) better photos of part of his dwarven army:

Hope those pictures were a bit better than the last.

Does anyone know if Dwarves have a crossbow option? He swears he saw an option in one of our rulebooks, but we can't find it now...

Thanks again!

Spent a bit of downtime tonight greenstuffing the gaps of a Wild Warg Chieftain.

Replaced the body he was standing on with a piece of pine bark surrounded with greenstuff - I'll finish filing it into shape later. The rocks in the back are to add some weight to that side of the figure.

Does it takes longer for greenstuff to dry in very cold temperatures?

Suggestions welcomed! I'd love to improve the small amount of sculpting that I do manage to find time for these days

Great looking stuff! Those Dwarves are very different from how I do mine, but they look very neatly done!

I suggest you to leave greenstuff for a few hrs to get it dry and strong since you used a bit good amount of it

as for shading the grimhammers, try this:
Citadel Shade: Druchii Violet
Citadel Shade: Nuln Oil

for the bases if you wanna give the dwarves a fine snow base, use this...
Citadel Texture: Mourn Mountain Snow

it creates small grainy surface pigments that will seem like thin snow...
