Try some clear silicone around the base of the barrels Pasi. (The clear stuff you use to seal your bath with) apply a small blob in the designated area and then pick it into splashes with a pin.

So that's meant to be applied instead of the textured paint, right? How well does it support paint on top of it, or did you mean just leaving it as is?

I still have the rest of the barrels unassembled so I can definitely try that trick.

It can be applied after the rest of your basework has been completed Pasi. Make the water effect on your base however you choose and complete the paint job on the model. The silicone is the very last thing to add - it reequires no painting as will dry clear anyway. Hang on i have an example somewhere

Image

Although the silicone usage on the tentacles is quite excessive as i wanted quite a lot of disturbed water and splashes on them the smaller blob you start with the smaller the splashes will be when you pick at them with your pin. It dries clear and does not require paint.

You can apply a layer of gloss varnish to your splashes but make sure you leave it a good 24 hours to dry before you do this or the weight of the varnish and gravity will pull your splashes over and make them curl.

It is amazing how much you can learn from reading some of the technical know-how exchanged on the O-R...
Nice tentacles btw.

I have bought the silicon but haven't tried it out yet. Pics in a few days.

Meanwhile, I'm painting Tauriel for the painting challenge and a box of Mirkwood Rangers to accompany her.

Here are the first complete elves, which I painted to try out the colour scheme. The one on the right is the first try, based on Camo Green and yellow browns and the left one Catachan Green and red browns. The hooded man is Amrathir, a player character in our RPG campaign.

Image

Here are the rest of the rangers in various states of WIP. Note the green primer I have used. It works well for painting greens over it. That's Vallejo primer again.

And two WIP photos of Tauriel:

I intended to paint her in autumnal colours but for some reason the waist cloak thing ended up quite bright.

Very vibrant colors, not confused with bright, just popping. I like the camo green scheme with the pale brown. sweet, have fun painting the rest of the force.

I agree, colours are the most vibrant I've seen.

This is all awesum looking
and i agree on the silocone kit, im using the same for my diorama challenge entry..using it for the river and a waterfall...its a bit gloopy on large surfaces but its easy to mold into the right..shape..
im hitting it with a plastic spoon for smallish waves and waterchurning..and just a wooden paintstir stick to add a sense of fastflowing water

but really liking ur WIP so far, very good painting

Thanks for the encouragement! I too kind of like the vibrant green on the waist but it is more like a summer green when I was aiming for autumn. Well, Tauriel may be young enough to wear summer. :-)

I finally finished the water effects on the dwarves as Kev suggested. I really like the effect here, especially Thorin's staff looks now more, um, watery. :-) Thanks for the tip!

That water effect adds so much to those models of Thorin's company at BOB. Well done

They do look excellent. Did you use some thin transparent plastic sheet for the splashes then covered them with water effect ?

No, they are just tiny blobs of clear silicone I pulled into shape with the tip of a knife. Super simple!

D.M.S posted some instructions a couple of weeks ago, they are at the top of this page (page 2).

I remembered the alternative version after I had posted this. It's something I'm after trying out.

Wow! The water effects look great. I'd love to see a picture of the models in the river.

It's been a while since I last posted a WIP, but the Tale of 20 Painters got me into WIP mode again. Here is a colour scheme experiment for my Mirkwood Elf army:

Image

I experimented with a kind of "extreme highlights" on the clothing - quite dark base colors with only a bit lighter highlights and then a very sharp and light highlight on the edges. Not yet sure if I like the style or not. The edges look great from gaming distance, but I still hesitate a bit.
