With all the extended films being available on iTunes etc, what format do people prefer having ? To me (and I'm sure a lot of people) part of the appeal is as a collectors item, something substantial to have in your collection :) Having the digital version takes a lot of that appeal away, the same with the special edition soundtrcks. Maybe I'm too old fashioned haha

It depends on the format. I like to get the physical blu-ray for watching on the telly downstairs but then that doesn't play on my computer (no blu-ray drive) so I've got the digital copy too to watch the extras while I'm painting - yep, it's both for me :-)

I'm a big fan of the digital downloads lately. I mostly watch the movies on my computer already (greatly appreciate by the other one living in the house, since I don't take up the TV that way lol) so that makes digital easier. And I find it easier to just open itunes and click when I want to watch, and not first have to get the dvd. Additional, it's a great way for references for pairing this way.

As a bonus, digital download is always available early!

No commentary though - that really winds me up! :-X

Both for me. But I love the physical boxsets.

I say get the physical box sets. In both of the Hobbit ones so far, you get a UV copy so you can download/stream to a tablet/computer anyway, while still having all the hours of extras. The DoS EE box also has an awesome lenticular cover!

I don't know if there's a version of the LotR EEs with a UV copy, but if not, I still say physical; Given the choice, I'd always watch LotR on a bigger screen with 'proper' sound systems.

The fact the download version doesn't come with the commentary is the really dealbreaker for me, I love having as many extras to watch as possible..... plus it looks awesome on your bookshelf having all the extended DVD's ;)

Definitely physical for me.
Must say, I love The Hobbit and Desolation of Smaug in 3D versions and have them in both released editions (cinema and extended).

An interesting fact ...
As original LoTR EE box is still very expensive in my country (set is priced at ca. 80 GBP which is way to much for me :-X ), I bought UK release for less than 20 pounds last summer when visiting London. The only cons are lack of polish subtitles and spoken language , but these are not a big issues :P

I bought the extended LotR back when the pound was in the gutter for £17 on amazon. I like the way they look, but to be honest I'd probably stick to the digital version today.

IMO there's no point having anything you intend to keep for a long time as a download. The boxes of DVDS etc are to be treasured and perhaps on occasion, displayed.

Always get the physical copy! What happens if the weird happens and you lose your digital library?

The physical copy is yours forever. Since many of them come with a downloadable version you have the best of both worlds.

If I had to choose one, it would be physical. I don't ever watch just one movie at a time, I always do a marathon, so I make sure to have the highest quality I can get, which is Blu-Ray. That being said, I bought the EE Trilogy Blu-Ray set a few years back and it came with an iTunes download for all three, which has come in handy on many a long road trip. The new ones have UltraViolet, so even though I prefer the watching them on a big TV, I have the all of them digitally. I haven't used the digital version of the Hobbit ones yet, but it's nice to know that I have them in case something happens to my physical copies.
