Well, seeing as a I have a Minas Tirith army to test, and I have some new things to help me with basing, I thought I should jump the gun and get into a painting frenzy with a couple of Uruk beserkers. Seeing as I have a whole box full of scouts, this would lay the foundations for me to be a little responsible and get me into the painting mood.

So the following image is the blister of the three beserkers all primed.
Image

And the first stage of painting:
Image

You can't see too much unfortunately...I'm still a bit of a newbie with the digi cam, and seeing as I've only painted the metal regions first...)

In any case, the procedure that I used for the metal areas was:
Tin Bitz> Chainmail drybrush>50:50 Mix of Chaos Black and Scorched Brown wash.

So far so good...considering that I haven't actually done that much yet the mistakes are at a minimum  I'm not sure whether I should highlight the helmet and sword.

My biggest problem at the moment? Whats the ideal colour skin for a beserker? Should I just paint it the normal flesh tones of an uruk-hai and then give it a scab red wash? If I knew this, this guy would've been finished way quicker.

Anyways thanks,
John

In this article the process of painting uruk's skin is very nicely described and I'd probably go for something similar.

yes that link is very useful but i use a different technique and colours for painting in bulk.

there are only two main ways for painting in bulk, and this is not highlighting!

instead either drybrush - though i wouldnt recommend this or...

paint on a colour and once dry give it a thinned down wash of a darker colour. I found that using Blood Red as the first coat, is the best way to go, especially seeing that you have a full set of scouts to paint. This my sound quite amateur-like but it isnt and can be completed in the two steps.

so once the Blood Red has been applied and has dried, apply a thinned down wash of about 1:4 of black:water, all over the skin. if you apply to much paint into the mixture, use a tissue to wipe it off the raised surface, otherwise let it dry.

this will allow the colour of te red to seem darker and less pure, yet not as dull as dark flesh, hope that helps :D

Hej haldir Strikes, these are great minis and I've enjoyed painting them in the past (not to metion they tend to go fast :-)

I painted mine exactly like the other Uruks, and then added red highlights (up to blood red) for the neck and head area (representing the blood splashed on them in their frenzy. In some cases I added a slight red highlight, but for the most part they have the same skin color as the other Uruks.

I also experimented with some inks to give them a kind of oily look, but this is not very noticible now (I've gamed with them a lot  )

At any rate, nice start and I look forward to watching your WIP... oh and have fun!

Well, second day, second stage :D
@Viruk: Yep, I had a look and keyzer soze's article, and I'm definately using it as the main basis to witch I'm painting my mini's. The only change I've made so far is the basic metallics.

So my new form of using metallics is:
Tin Bitz>Dry Brush of Chainmail>50:50 wash of scorched brown and Black Ink.

This mixture has actually worked pretty well, and has given the metals a nice, rusty look to them.

Anyways, the following 2 pics are from 2nd and 3rd stage flesh painting. It's turned out pretty well :)

Image

Just to reinstate what I did for the sake of the thread, so far the stages I've done are:
1.60:40 Mix of Scab Red and Chaos Black
2.Dark Flesh added to the above mix for first highlight....I watered it down a lot however so that the wash would bring out a little detail.
3. I finally highlighted the muscles(this guy is so ripped) etc, etc.

Image

Well, thats all for now, I just have to add a scab red highlight and the final wash of scab red:chaos black and the skin should be done :)

3rd day, 3rd Stage :)

What I've managed to do so far is highlight all the leather parts using a pretty simple leather guide which is as follows:

50:50 mix of Scorched Brown and Chaos Black> Highlighted with Scorched Brown>Highlighted once again with a mix of 50:50 Bestial and Scorched Brown.

I highlighted the skin once again with a mix of 60:40 Scab Red and Chaos Black. Now atm, I'm not too sure whether I should do the final highlight of the skin, and then give it a wash so it retains that nice dirty uruk skin look.

I really like it :) ! Perhaps lighten the loin cloth slightly to differentiate it from the skin and increase the contrast?

Looking really good Haldir, nice highlights and the muscle tone is really standing out. I'm sure the pictures don't do it justice, but I think Turgon has a point; lighten the loincloth a bit to bring it out. Keep up the good work.

Cheers

The mini has a dirty and rugged look, which is perfect for the Berserkers of Isengard. Very nice skin tone, the muscles stand out the way they should.
I agree about the leather parts - one or more highlights should make them look better.

Thanks for all the valuable feedback so far, its really keeping me going!

Well, I took the advice about the leather areas, and I've redone them again, the brighter higlights definately make it look much better. Before I go on to the next beserker, I just want to know if I should highlight the Uruk's skin one more time.

The latest WIP pic shows the finished(well almost) beserker, and an uruk scout, which I was painting for kicks basically. The reason I'm showing the comparison is that I just want to know about the whole flesh-tone thing. When I painted the scout I really had no idea I could highlight skin that well :?

Anyways, this is todays update:

An extreme closeup
The scout has a darkflesh highlight and the scab red, dark flesh wash as well, whilst the beserker hasnt been changed apart from his leather.

Anyways, please tell me what you think, and C&C is always appreciated :)

they both look great!
though the colours are similar you managed to make leather and skins distinguishable!
and the metal at the other stands greatly out with it's shimmering surface.

I've only painted one berserker (at the very beginning of starting painting minis and skin, leather, everything looked the same), but now seeing your's I like to try to paint and try at least another!
