Ecthellion II was the father of Denethor (The one in the movie), he was a brave steward and a good tactician, he led the Gondorians to many victories over his reign...

Ecthellion II:

Points Value: 100

F/S S D A W C M/W/F
5/- 4 7 2 2 6 3/2/1

Wargear: Ecthelion II wears The Armour of the steward (+3 defence), he carries the horn of gondor (before it was passed down to Denethor and then Boromir) and wields a longsword (Hand weapon or 2H weapon but not both in the same turn). He may be given the following items at an additional cost:

horse............................10pts

Special Rules:

My Son!: In the earlier days, Denethor was a strong and able captain. If Denethor, Captain of Minas Tirith is in the same force, he costs 10 points less.

NOTE: He has the same armour as a guard of the fountain court - That is the reason for its +3 defense. He cannot carry a shield becasuse he wields a sword which can be used as a 2H weapon.

I think the "My son" rule would be better designating a Captain to be Denethor instead of getting one for free, which would be a HUGE advantage for such a small cost.

Sorry, What I meant was that he gets the extra point of might and +2 will for free, You don't get the captain for free - You still have to pay 55pts for the captain in the first place.

Sorry for the misunderstanding!!

I'd say that the rule would be if you get a captain you may pay 5 points extra for him to be Denethor.
Or you could make him more expensive.

+EDIT+

Or make another stat line for Denethor (Call him Denethor the bold or something) and make him a named hero.

The point is that you get an extra point of might and +2 will for free. Thats the advantage of taking Ecthellion II and a captain, you can get 15pts worth of stats for free!!

Yes, but that is a lot for such a cost.
So it could be you could upgrade to Denethor for 5 points IMO, still saving points.

If you are paying 95 points for the hero, then +5 is nothing. Besides, It makes the rule too complex...

Actually, your hero is about worth 95 points by himself, if every hero stat is worth 5 points (Which I think is about right).
Compare to Faramir with heavy armor, at 75 points.
Add a defense and courage point, that's 85.
Then add what is technically an elven blade for another 5, so 90.
But you have one less fate, so 85.
And then the Horn of Gondor, which is worth at LEAST 10 points on its own.

So I think you should buff up Ecthelion's points by 10 or 15 to compensate if you want to have the My Son! rule as it stands.

I used LOTR cost calculator to calclate it - It says 95 excluding his special rule - I will add 5 pts for his special rule..

I still think you should add Denethor as a separate Named Hero instead of having him upgraded with some special rule.

EDIT:

My Son!: His son at the time of Ecthelion's reign was a captain of Minas Tirith. If Ecthellion is included in the force, The army has access to Denethor, Captain of Minas Tirith for an additional cost. Denethor has the following profile:

Denethor, Captain of Minas Tirith:

Points Value: +70

F S D A W C M/W/F
4/- 4 7 2 2 4 3/3/1

Wargear: Denethor wears heavy armour. He carries a shield and a sword

I believe it was mentioned that Denethor was a very great leader in his day, overshadowed only by Thorongil (Aragorn in disguise) and so should probably be somewhere between his sons: better than Faramir (otherwise he couldn't very well think Faramir weak) but not as good as Boromir.

I also think you should do them as separate Heroes, not requiring Ecthelion to take Denethor.

Okay - Then I will need another special rule for Ecthellion II.

I will change the profile...

Denethor, Captain of Minas Tirith:

Points Value: 70pts

F S D A W C M/W/F
4/- 4 7 2 2 4 3/3/1

Wargear: Denethor wears heavy armour. He carries a shield and a sword

Special Rules: see Ecthellion II

I was thinking something more along the lines of:

Denethor, Captain of the White Tower:

Points Value: 100pts

F S D A W C M/W/F
5/- 4 7 3 2 6 3/2/3

Wargear: Denethor wears heavy armour. He carries a shield and a sword.

I don't like the Cost Calculator. I find it easier to find a hero with a similar statline and subtract/add points and stats as necessary.

I normally use a captain of Rohan and go from that. 10 points for wounds and attacks, 5 for everything else. Except special rules.

Also I like the new rule, but Denethor IMO should be:
Points: 85..........Might: 3
F...S..D..A..W.C Will: 2
5...4..6..3...2..5 Fate: 2

Wargear:
Denethor carries a sword (hand weapon) wears heavy armour.
At an additional cost he may have:
The banner of Minas Tirith...........50 points
Horse.......................................10 points
Lance........................................5 points
Shield.......................................5 points

That is what I would say.
