Nice work Alan, I like the 'inverted nipple', it adds character to the tree however lay off the lousy puns :)

Time for an update. I've been diligently puttying my tree for 15 minutes each night, leaving the greenstuff to set over night before working on the neext bit.

As a result, it's taken me a couple of weeks to cover the whole thing, but the results are worth the wait I think (we all know what Brian will think).

I've started covering the branches with foliage now, but ran out this afternoon and will have to wait until next weekend before I can get any more.

The rear of the tree is still defoliated:

The model stands about 8 inches high - I can stand up a normal 28mm model underneath it - so it's easily the biggest tree I've ever made.

She looks great... Miss Twiggy. Baroom.

You do know the Balrog probably has half the Tesco staff in Newcastle up building a fullsize replica of Bag-end under the Angel of the North....

He better watch out for the Sackville-Bagginses!

The foliage is from a German company called MiniNatur and is item number 980-22 Oak Summer. They make some magnificent stuff but it's expensive - 17Euros for one packet (US$24, £13) - so I can't see it being used on all of my wargaming trees.

Mr Balrog hasn't started on his yet s far as I can tell, I don't expect any movement in the North until November.

And I like the adjective. "defoliated"

Just visited my local hobby store and they have run out of this specific product (lots of other types of wonderful foliage, all completely the wrong colour) and won't be able to get any for another four weeks! I just hate living in the *rse-end of the world.

Oh well, time to move on to other parts of the model while I source another supplier.

How's the weather? I'm sure the summer you have coming will be better than the one we just had in the UK - unless you've got a thing for rain.

Nice tree. You said that you couldn't sculpt but it looks like you can to me! That bark looks really good. :D

Not that I'm aiding the fellow in the other hemisphere but if your stuck for foliage, Antenocities workshop is a fantastic place to shop and will supply you with your haves and wants in no time. Now come on Brian and give us Brits something to cheer about! :D

It says I'm British on my passport, so I guess I must be. I'm a little out of touch though, er, who is in charge there these days? - Is Lizzy still the queen? I really should keep up with what's going on in Blighty.

Nathan, the weather here is absolutely the best it can be - perfect temperature, occasional rain shower, cool at night and the days are growing longer. I love spring in Oz.

Thanks for the suggestion Jack, but I need something that matches the existing foliage, and while I love Jed's stuff at AW, it's not suitable for this job unfortunately.

I have started work on some of the facades for the Hobbit Hole. I am toying with the idea of having them lazer cut. Ive just finished a test piece and will be sending them off shortly. This way I can (hopefully) guarantee perfect circles.
The test piece I am sending will be the front entrance, so one large circle and two small to be cut.
Once I have this back, you should all start seeing some things coming together.

Looking at Alans stoopid tree, I decided to start on mine. Obviously with a project such as this, it does nothing just to copy the other guy, therefore I chose to go a different way using Woodland Scenics tree armatures.
These things come flat and need a lot of work to get something looking decent...
Image
Using a combination of SuperGlue Gel and Green Stuff, individual branches were cut, bent and put into place ubtil a full tree was created...
Image
Its been sprayed black and the plan now is to drybrush it with various browns and then add the foliage.

ADDITIONAL:
Forgot to mention that the base of the tree is not finished. I will be extending the base of the trunk and adding a root system.

Hmm. I detect an element of tree rage creeping in...

Done the preliminary stages of the root system. The green stuff you see is just to hold everything in place, I need this to cure before I can attach the main part of the tree and then sculpt onto the roots and the trunk...
