Been working on the Parlour Window for last 3 hours or so, unfortunately, I have been ill of late and off work as a result, however tonight I am going back to work, so no doubt work on this will dramatically slow down now.
Anyway, heres the Parlour Window so far...

I agree with Dagorinyourback, it's the wrong colour :P

But the detail looks amazing!

You're not really Kermit the Frog, are you?

Moving swiftly on (past the growling and eye-rolling phases), I like the work (laser-guided or otherwise) on the parlour. Very neatly done.

No lasers involved, all cut by hand (which is pretty obvious, not as neat as I would have liked). Still waiting for the test piece to be done by laser, but this has re-installed my confidence with cutting by hand.

I have painted the the wall colour, choosing an Orangey/Brown fading into light cream, very pleased with it. Just need to start the woodwork. I have prelimanary gone with a Scorched Brown undercoat, however I am now thinking of Dark Grey and building up to light with a minute amount of Brown mixed in to stick with the film woodwork..but unsure ?

Scorched Brown would give a much richer colour and a very nice contrast even when highlighted up, but I am open to your oppions before I make a decision ?

I would go for the grey, I think it fits in better with the colour schemes from what I have seen so far.

Also, I think that the richer colour of scorched brown is too dominating and less realistic than, say, a more greyish wood. As wood fades in colour with age, a rich brown makes it look like a recently constructed house and not something that has been around for a while, which is the case in most of the shire! Personally I think scorched brown looks more like brown paint on wood than actual wood, I tend to avoid it.

I think he's been at the ale again !!!..You do realise Bart that that is an actual photo of the 'actual Bag End ?

I haven't posted any pics of it being painted yet

Thanx for the feedback Olofer, I think I'll do a test piece in grey.

After much staring at the piece, I am thinking of recutting a new window piece and also replacing the 3 strut supports at the top under the canopy, theyr'e too wide and the window frame is too messy.

Bart, irony is wasted on children. Or was it ego that made Brian think you were serious?

Either way, I thought your comment was hilarious. Still, you've given Brian an idea now - he's going to try and pass off a photo of the real thing as his own work now, just watch!

While Brian has been focusing on the parlour and his laser cut trees (or whatever), I've been working on the front door. Still not finished to any great degree yet, but it's coming together much as I want it to look:

Marvellous! The fine detail on the window is astounding. And no lasers were involved.....

Brilliant update again, what is the white material you are using for the bricks, is it plaster you have carved into?

The bricks around the door are card covered in polyfilla, with the bricks carved into it. The ones around the window are ProCreate with Polyfilla (which is why they look a bit grey). The bricks on either side of the door are polyfilla with the joints carved in.

The plaster rendering is all polyfilla and the timber sections are balsa wood or bass wood.

The windows are remarkably simple actually and I'll do a mini article about how to get this sort of effect once this build-off has finished (or Brian and I get bored with it).
