When I first saw the first stage of the gate, before you posted this article, I was stunned at the level of detail and asked myself 'how the hell does he do that' :?
Now after reading the article and seeing the 'extremely' basic materials you use ... well, I am flabbergasted :yay:

Once in a blue moon a great article comes along, but recently, we have had a few back to back, but this one takes first prize for me !!!

Eagerly look forward to seeing Part 2 :D

Excellent job and not an easy terrain project to tackle, but you make it look quite easy. Great job and look forward to the rest of the articles on the Black Gate! :D

Absolutely amazing!

Inspired and inspiring.
Thankyou so much for sharing these outstanding articles lotrscenerybuilder. :yay:

If I might add one tiny (but important) crumb...
MDF dust is actually quite hazardous to a persons health. Whilst filing, cutting it, all care should be taken to avoid inhaling the dust.
It would be good to mention that often in these brilliant articles.

Stunning isn't it? Fantastic piece of terrain. Amazing what you can do with pretty much just cardboard and toothpicks.

Great article Adrian! Looking forward for the Gatehouse! 8)

Ye Gods... intricate is not the word for this... 10/10 is inadequate! I would be even more mad if I had to make all those fiddley little cuts...

Thinks: build Black Gate even bigger - that way, fiddley BIG cuts not small ones

Ha, I wanted to see, so I looked at the picture, btu I got distracted and just read the whole article again.

Fantastic. These "Simple"(Hope you don't mind me saying it!) methods of making masterpieces ... it's Fantastic.

(un)Holy :!: That's one of the best terrain-making articles I've ever seen! And the work itself is outrageously good!!!

This deserves a standing ovation! I have not seen a better or more accurate version of this model ever, and the quality of the article writing is of the highest order.

I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series.

:yay:

I am going to have to side with Dorth.....small fiddly cuts are way to much for me. It is brilliant step by step though and i give it 10/10. Someday i may go ahead and try it.... 8)

Thanks for all the praise, sirs! I feel flattered beyond all measure. It definitely does motivate me to plod on with my party-sticks.

I hope I didn’t scare you off with all my mumbling in the article about suffering and self-pity. Actually, it is quite fun to work on a model like this. Quite easy too, with all the templates ready at hand (…). It is a rewarding job as at every stage these elements become more detailed – and the Gate grows bigger. Believe me, the pictures do not tell you all.

It will take some time to produce the second article about (1) the making of the smaller ‘hinge-tower’, (2) the gate-wall next to it and (3) the higher wall that connects the gate to the big tower. All should be ready around Christmas (that should give you sufficient time to finish both Gateway elements yourself!)

@ Dorthonion: as for these “fiddley little cuts”: I had similar thoughts about the paintwork on your model of Zirak-Zigil… OK then, we’re both mad.

@ MacGothmog: let it be known in public that it’s partly due to your editing skills that the article looks the way it does! 8)

@ Bhikkhu: “Sanctus igitur Dionisius, qui tradente beato Clemente Petri apostoli…”

@ Dagorlad: dam(…)it! Highest praise possible. You can’t surprise me anymore…

@ frodolikescheese: just cut an A-spike to find out… and you might start tomorrow…

@ El Rabbito: yours might be taller, but mine’s more to the points. :P

Last but not least:
@ Onyx: You’re absolutely right. I will make a note on the correct use of MDF right away in the next article; meanwhile, I hope people will read your remark here (luckily, there isn’t much sawing involved in the first part but that’s going to change with the 2nd and 3rd part).

@ all others: thanks again! (to be continued)

Hm… it looks like Mr. Postman did some sorting himself before delivering… Suppose I have to thank him too…
