Hahaha thanks dude. You know what, I'm not sure whether to give him eyes, or one of those withering contemptuous stares. You know, kinda like *I'm gonna get you* (stares angrily at orc).

Ok guys, small update from me. I'm still working on my wood-elves, but I'm also painting up some extra stuff for someones tournament army.

Lucky me, I get to play with the new AoTD sprues, and boy oh, boy they have SO much detail. It's freaking amazing.

Image

I can't wait to take the brush to these guys, unfortunately I don't have a tank brush, nor an air brush - so basecoating is gonna take a while ><

In other news, I'm painting up a royal guard. Two small mid-WiP shots:

I've filled in most of the basic stuff, but damn, that lighting sucks!

I'll get some more pics posted(better one's hopefully!) soon.

Cheers!

Bah who cares about the lighting... it only matters in the final picture! :P
The royal guard is going along nicely!

Metallics look interesting ;)

You said that plastic AoD are big, can you take some comparison photo with other mini ? And how's the quality of cast ?

the quality of the casts is fantastic - painted up they could be metal. In terms of size, yes, they are big - about the same size as black numenoreans

here's a shot i took the other day to show the size of a model i sculpted, which just happens to include the MoS and a WotD (bear in mind that this one is kinda stooping):Image

As tirno said, cast quality is amazing - easily the best set of sprues that GW has ever released for the range. Extra bonus, almost no mould lines! There was minimal cleaning up to do!

Ok here's an update of the first Warrior of the Dead - it's just a test-scheme to see if I like it. I decided to move away from the neon green (ergh) schemes that are running around and do something a little darker and grittier. The weapons of my AoTD will all be painted as if they actually exist - the funny image of lots of swords and shields always pops into my head :-D

This is still pretty WiP - I've gotta do more shading on the sleeves to bring out the detail, and theres still the weapons and scabbard to do. So far I'd say painting time has come to about 2-3 hours...and I have to paint another 11 of these

Once again I'm fiddling with the lighting, but I reckon the first two pics are easily the best.

Cheers,

John

Nice work, I agree about the quality of the cast, although, they seem to be made of a different plastic than the other LotR models. There is just something 'harder' or 'brittle' about it. Reminds me of the plastics from Starship Troopers.

Also, whilst they are nice, they aren't as customisable as originally thought, as all the weapons/arms, have specific contact points. There are 4 different, separate shields however.

And I think that it's quite easy to tell the difference between the metal sculpts and the plastic. The chainmail gives it away.

Nice painting, though it can be confusing :D If it's a ghost how can it wear chainmal :D:D

Check this out, maybe it will be more to your likings ;)

How do you keep motivated!?, I've started to do one model at a time to improve my painting, but it takes sooo long, lol, I just painted a Galadrim archer in the same amount of time it took to paint 8 RoA

Well, at least you and the other great painters on this site have inspired batch painters like me to put time and (more) effort into our painting :-D

Good luck on the rest of those WotD 8)

I really like the colours you've chosen, it seems a lot more detailed than the plain grey look GW have chosen. And all this talk of the new sprues being quote, 'the best so far' is making these sound very tempting. Only 11 more to go :P

I like the uruks, though I often have the feeling that most uruks are too bright - in the films, they were often photographed at night or in forest settings so the looked darker and even more threatening. I may try using a slightly darker palette when I start on Saruman's army.

AotD: I have seen these in every version of pale green, pale grey or even white occasionally. I tried for the translucency best seen in the Path of the Dead when Aragorn is asking for them to fight for him - at the Pelennor, they were just too bright green for me. I like the new sculpts (saves me labouring over too many Rohan conversions!) and will be following my original schema as in this:

I noticed this when i converted riders of rohan by giving them dead shields - when compared side by side, the dead are noticably darker

(assuming that is about what i said about "they could be metal", though it probably isn't) what i meant was that they look as if they could be made out of metal with the level of detail on them, not that they can easily be confused with the metal ones.

did you try and follow the scheme on the GW website? I think your WOTD looks very good. Would you be able to tell me how you acheived that? am trying to follow the painting guide for the AOTD but when I paint the Thraka green over the model, it does not have the desired effect, it only pools in the recesses (as it is supposed to), leaving all other parts of the body grey and not as green as shown in step 3 of the GW website painting guide

Yeah, I like the greyish colour scheme you've got for the AOTD! :yay:
Looking forward to seeing more of that RRG! 8)

Haven't managed to make any more progress on the AoTD (Sorry guys!), however I have been dabbling around with some new stuff I recieved from Julian.

Here's a HE Archer who I just decided to randomly slap some paint on. I forgot to take a picture of his cloak - will rectify with the next update though.

Still pretty WiP. Need to just get around to finishing off the small details and basing him and it should be all good :)

I'd add some more contrast on armour to make it stand out more.

Other than that great job, smooth painting on the clothes
