Hello again!

I just saw Thror Clawhammer's forum on unit tactics and thought I might make my own rip-off of it: THE FORMATIONS TOPIC!!!!!

Basically, you post up one of your favourite formations, and show us how the formation changes as the battle progresses. This could either be a great formations archive, or a load of c***. You decide. :D

well im a beardy player myself
so when i use gondor and feifdoms conbined
i use

2 groups of hard formations

a elite group and a infantry one

the elite one consists of
6 knights of dol amroth backed by
6 axeman of lasoranch which is then backed by
6 men @ arms of dol amroth

the other is 10 warriors of minas tirith backed by 10 warriors with spears

i use the elite force to distract then i flank with the simple warriors
and flank the other side with cavelry.

with isengard i always set up a shield wal of some about 10 uruks with shield. than 4 feral 2 berserker a captain and about 8 pikes somthimes also a banner.
the 10 shield uruks are the arrow takers and the flankers.
the ferals berserkers and captain attack his heroes and the weaker units to get him to courage test.

the troublewith formations is they can only really work well in a specific terrain set. you have to adapt depending on the surroundings, there is no point going for a 20 wide shield wall if there is a building every 2"

IMHO I think this should be part of your plan. you also don't make an army for certain battle or terrain. You should have multiple formations for all sort of battles. So, I guess you should show us how flexible your army can be in different situations.

for instance, you let us know what's your normal formation and how it could be adapted to tight formation to suit a battle in a narrow passage or ambush situation...etc

BTW, if it matters I voted yes because I think it's at least a good idea.

Ouch... a Three Year old dead topic...

As the director said formations often need the terrain to be on their side too. Also sometimes the enemies force could counter-act a good formation. Again, something else that can cause a good formation to not work is your rolls... 10 Elven archers rolling 6's into your Uruk-Hai for example is not going be very helpful for your Phalanx

there was a quote I heard/read recently...forgotten where.

"No stratergy survives contact with the enemy"

I believe this to be so true for LoTR as no matter how well you plan your army, being able to predict what the other player plans to do or not, is the key skill that wins scenarios.

What annoys me is when people bring up tactics that would work in real life but not in a game...eg. a mass attack with your lines more than 4 bases deep in real life the momentum would break a one man deep line but in LoTR you will be slaughtered due to the unit being trapped.

If the board has a pass between some mountains dwarfes, I think are aewsome. Use shieldbearers and a capt and banner to shield, holding the pass, while using some rangers to climb over the rockyness with the reroll on the climb/jump tests, to flank and shoot.
