Well, royal-tease or not, I hope your orc-armour is realistic, ranging from a bit Heath-Robinson, to the 'Rejected by Scrapheap Challenge' variety. Lots of scraps of chainmail.
And shields too!

That's how I see it. I think my orcs will have scrappy armour.

Here's how far I've got with the first body. A naked orc! (No private parts shown.) I'm wondering about adding a head, casting a few and then adding armour to them.

The hands look huge but I'm wondering if they'll look okay once armour and clothing are added. I'll fiddle away with a file and make them a bit smaller. The left hand needs finger details made.

Wow, it's looking fantastic, Natarn!

The detail you achevied on the body is spectacilar, though naked orcs are slightly frightening. :o

The pose is very nice, and I look forward to seeing the head placed on the body. Have you begun to sculpt any armor for your orcs yet? I look forward to seeing that, as I like the ideas you have regarding their armor.

Keep up the great work, Natarn. 8)

 :o Uh-hu. Interesting...

I have to say the detail is astounding! I can't wait to see one fully kitted out with armour, shield, helmet, and head. :P

Looking good, Nathan. Can't wait to see the other parts (No, not THOSE parts!). 8)

The poses are suitably monkey-like - the way they should be. Good work so far.

I've been slowly working on the Orc and he's gradually taking shape.

I contacted Griffin Moulds to find out about the cost of casting.
It would cost £15 for a master mould (adding him to someone else's mould) and £45 to make a production mould. Castings are £3 a spin plus the cost of the metal.

Because this is just an armature for future Orcs, I think that I'd be better off hand-casting this model myself (using the Tiranti kit that UKFB reviewed) and making all the necessary conversions before considering if it's worth getting the final models professionally cast.

I really like the metal GW Orcs but am not a big fan of the plastic ones, so I want to increase my Orc army with my own sculpts. Well, that's the plan anyway. I'll have to see if they are good enough. I am enjoying myself and I'm really looking forward to having a go with the metal casting! Weeeeeeeeeeeeheeeeeeeeeeeeee! That looks like fun!

I've enjoyed casting with plaster, but to actually make my own mini using metal will be very exciting for me. I'll keep you posted.

Here are some pics showing how far I've got with the Orc Armature (Naked Orc!). I need to add some toes to his left foot.

His sword arm is holding a small piece of wire, which helped with sculpting and shows where to cut and drill to fix a weapon. I am going to make a range of different shields for the other arm and bows that can be fitted to the left hand.

Very cool.

I am totally envious of your abilities Nate. I'd love to be able to sculpt miniatures. Or even just Werewolves.

Maybe it is time to think about waxing my head...

Its really good Nate!

Will you be giving any orcs a cloak, perhaps one all worn with holes and tears along the bottom? On that note, you see one orc in osgiliath in the film with a ranger's cloak (scavanged of course hehe).

thanks

Corsair

Thanks, everyone.

I don't know, Corsair. I may do. The possibilities of scrappy clothes and armour are endless. :-D

Your orc looks great Nate. I can see you're going to have loads of fun trying out different clothes & weapons on your armature.

Looks very good. Nice and detailed. It'll be a shame seeing this one being covered up with clothes..

One small criticism though, isn't the pose too specific for an armature?

Good point, Sean, but I don't think so. The arms will be bent, the legs can be moved, the head turned etc. etc.
