Thanks for the comments guys. :)

I'm not really sure about painting golden line again, I like it how it is. I wanted it to be a small subtle detail, mainly so I could practice working on embroidered lines. Another thing, is that it is more visible IRL. So, I think I'll probably keep it as is.

As I said before, I'll be starting work on my Modular Dwarf Mine towards the end of the week. Look for a terrain related update around then. :)

:D :-D Sounds interesting. Is it something you designed yourself or are you basing it off an article?

I'm sort of annoyed, sort of not because I just started a dwarf army, painted them with red cloth and silver armour to make them "unique", then discovered this thread and found that someone has done something similar! Great work! Can't wait to see the finished army with terrain!

Hey everyone, I'm very close to finishing off the first three Iron Guard. All that remains is to highlight some straps, and also touch-up a few areas and then we're done. :)

I'm sorry for the poor quality of the photos, I'll make sure to take better one's next time I update. When I was taking pictures of these guys, dissaster almost struck...
This clown decided it was a good idea to jump up onto the area where I was taking my pictures...

Image

He then proceded to bite one of the Iron Guard, whom I was luckily able to save. Pets.
C&C welcome. :)

Nice paintwork, Josh! My compliments! :yay:

You have a steady hand, it’s all neat paintwork. I have a little suggestion but keep in mind that it comes from someone who hasn’t painted a single miniature in his whole life  (yet). I do agree with Corsair and Joansean about the use of black paint. Personally, I love the use of black washes on these models. If you pay attention to it I think it would surprise you how much black there actually is in daily life: in the clothes of people, in nature, in buildings. Most of it comes from shadows and dirt. Because the relief of the GW miniatures is – necessarily – too shallow, the black won’t show naturally. That’s why I would probably use a lot of black (streaks, washes, tiny dirt spots). What’s more, I think I would choose just a single ‘main’ colour, let’s say red, for the jacket of a miniature – or a series of miniatures, Dwarves or Elves. I would then try to keep all other colours on the miniature fairly nondescript: a flash of brown on the buckle, a hint of green for the trousers. Next I would wash everything with brown and black in a way that your first and only thought on seeing the model would be: “oh, he wears a red coat” - i.e. where colours are concerned. If I want to have gold on the helmet, again: just a hint of it – and a dirty one. In other words: I would paint my miniatures in black & sepia, with only hints of colours and nowhere exuberance. I think this will add to the realism but of course I would have to try first to find out for sure. Of course, mail shirts are an exception to the rule: mine would very much look like yours – that is: if I had your painting skills.

Again, these are the ideas of a non-painter. I hope I can add something more serious when you start building your terrain!

Thanks for the comments and criticisms guys, it is greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks for the compliments, Adrian. I certainly will keep your suggestion in mind, I've been considering using black as my secondary cloth color for awhile, I think it'll provide a nice contrast to the red. I'll try to add more shading washes as well.

I should be getting some of the materials needed for my terrain project this weekend, and I'll certainly update when I do begin. You're advice will be very helpful come terrain building time, Adrian. :-D

Are you planning on painting eyes? I would be very excited if you would be making an article for the terrain piece, I love any sort of article and as I'm interested in dwarves, all the better. :)

Interesting idea lotrscenerybuilder it would be cool if you could paint some miniatures and test the idea. 8)

I will, but not on these models as they're obscured by their helmets.

I'll be taking lots of step by step pictures, but whether or not I write an article will depend upon the quality of the end result. I'll greatly value everyones input on the terrain. If its good enough, I'll have all the pictures I need for an article. :)

Great painting Josh,
But with the golden lines on the red robes, I think you need another layer of Shining Gold, or you could even use another colour like green or something, because the gold doesnt really stand out, although the green would look a bit wierd :P

Lovely job so far! I must admit though that I think the robes would look a bit better with some brighter highlights...

Keep it up!

Hey guys. :)

As promised, I'm here with a terrain update. I worked on the basic structure, cut out a chasm and added some elevation to some of the rock formations. Hope you guys enjoy.

Image

The board in all its bare glory.

Here's the begining of the chasm.

And here it is, with just a little more work on the chasm.

Here is a shot showing some of the rock formations, and the photos that follow will also show the rock formations.

C&C very welcome. :)

That terrain will look awesome, I can just tell. 8)

Although, as you obviosley know, polystyrene makes heaps of mess, so you could but a hot wire cutter, or you do what I sometimes do: Heat up a wire over a flame. :P

It also leaves a nice rock-looking texture where you have cut it.

Well, I would have prefered to use the blue styrofoam, instead of polystyrene, but was unable to find it. The rock formations are very far from being finished, so they will look different in the end. Only the basic structure of those two rock formations is finished.

Hopefully so. :)

The board is 2ft X 2ft, but I'll be making four of those to create a 4f X 4ft modular board.

I've done some more work on it and should have pictures up sometime today. :)

It looks promising, Josh.
One thing you could use for a rocky texture is pine bark, that looks very good. 8)

Olle, you're a mind reader!

That was the plan, hopefully it'll come out good. :)
